WHITBY FREE PRESS,. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 7,1982, PAGE 19 ENTE R TAINM ENT Mathure turn's to the sereen h new Simnion comedy Walter Matthau, Ann- Margret and Dinah Manoff star i a heart- warming comedy from 2th Century-Fox, "Neil Simon's I Ought To -Be In Picture, " which is expected to open soon in Durham Region. When the spirited, for- thrîght'19-year-old daughter of a once suc- cessful Hollywood writer unexpectedly walks in on the. father she hasn't seen in, 16 years, their reunion sets the scene for- Neil Simon's nws comedy, adapted from his Broadway hit and directed by Herbert Ross. Manoff, in a repriie of her Tony Award- winning role, plays Lib- by~ Tueker, a brash Brooklynite* who jour- neys to the film capital to assume her rightful,, place arnong the stars. She is also, though less consciously, hoping to re-establish a relation- ship with the father she hasn't seen or heard fÈom' since she was three years old. Matthau is Herb Tucker, who, having micely adjusted to bach- elorhood and poverty - the resuit of now-routine rejections',of his writ- ings - is «forced to face the, responsibilities of fatherhood, for which he is totally unprepared. The Icatalyst to, their rocky 'reunion is Ann- Margret, as Rerb's girl- friend Steffy Blondeli. The multi-talented per- former takes on a role quite unlike any she's ever attempted in bring- ing the level-headed, loving character of Stef- fy to the screen. "Pictures" is pro- .duced' by Simon and Ross whose previous collaborations, "The Sunshine Boys", "The Goodbye Girl" and "lCalifornia Suite", have earned a total of 16 Academy- Award nomi- nations and three oscars. In addition, Ross bas directed two of' Simon's mrost successful Broadway playq, "lChapter Two" in 1977 and "I Ought'To Be In Picturýs" in 1980. Place in a soup tureen or large seryingý bowl when ready to eat. The. beans can sit all day in the oven until you are ready for them.«' Salait or coleslaw can be made early in the day and kept, refr igerated until needed. White dinner roîls and a dark rye bread can be-pur- chased from a store. Pie can be made the day before. Cheese And Fruit: Take it from me, an all-time favourite that can even substitute for a sweet dessert is a cheese and, fruit platter. Arrange a variety of cheese, such as brie, gouda, camem- bert and cheddar around a fancy plate and place a bunch of green grapes in the cen- tre. A small bread bas- ket of assorted crackers on the side is a nice touch but not necessary. LEFTOVERS Leftovers usually mean sandwiches and shivers. It needn't be so. Ham is quite versa- tile. It -can be minced for sandwiches sure, but you can also dice it for use as a substitute in chicken a la king, in a quiche lorraine, or to stuff crepes. If all else fails make a greater than great goup. This recipe was given to me by the, great-grand- mother of a French Canadian friend of mine and is excellent. Madame Chabot's French Canadian Pea Soup: leftover hunk of ham, 1 lb. '(4 c.) dry yellow or green split peas, il c. water, 3 onions finely chopped, 2 carrots -diced, ½ jýc.' celery leaves finely chopped, 1 bay leaf, pin- ch of dried parsley, saît and pepper to taste. .Place all ingredients in a large saucepan and boil for 5 minutes. Take off the heat and let stand covered for one hour. Put back on the heat, bring to a boil and then simmer, covered, for two hours. Remove ham from soup and cut into desired size chunks, and return to the soup. (A tiny shot of sherry at serving time does won- ders for the flavour.) NOTE: The soup is always better the next time it is reheated. It will keep in the refriger- ator for 4 days or can be frozen for a month.
