WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 7,1982, PAGE 7 Prettyý girls wanted for contest TO RUN OR NOT TO RUN When my son was small, about four or five, he was a terror, in as much as he used to manage to steal away and get himself conveniently,"lost" every time we went into a departinent store. Within five minutes of our arrivai we were sure to hear an announcement over the P.A. ... "We have a littie lost boy.dressed in blue pants and a red shirt by the name of Grant. Would his parents please pick him* up at the service desk located at such and such a place". This was frustrating, however acceptable, for the first three or four times. After that, it was. annoy- ing. Everything was tried; scolding,-threatening; bottom smacking; to no avail. One day we were in the Oshawa Centre, walking down'the main corridor'towards the southern en- trancé to Simpsons. Sure enough, as we approached the littie hill, and the doors, my son wriggled free of my grasp and took off. Enough was enough. I le him go, watching every inch of his progress. He dan- ted behind the clothing racks and had upon his face a look of sheer delight. O.K. - Time for a showdown. I mentioned to my husband not to go after him - as a matter-of fact ignore him completely and take his cue from me. Slowly we meandered through the store, keeping a close watch on our son at all times but not letting him know. Sure enough after about 10 minues of not being able to find anyone to "tunn himself over to",i up runs number one son, grinning fnom, ear to eéar1 and chattering to beat the band. -Sorw-e.*et hii1T.,. I finally looked his way and said:, "Oh, look it's a. little boy just like our Grant" and turned away. "it isme mom ... look it's Grant". "Oh no," I replied, "I used tohave a little boy just like you but he nan away. I guess Il neyer see him again. " At this point we turned aiyay and started to walk down an aisle. . We didn't know whether to laugh or cry. We had i tearful, panicky little boy tugging on us crying, "It is me mom, look it's your son." We couldn't put the lad through any more misery. I turnèd anound and said, "You know I.think this is Grant. I guess he wasn't lost aftér.a.ll.'rMy husband picked up the vibes and joined me.
