Region to awa rd tender for Faiew Lodge renovations .Durham Regional Council la expected to award the tender for the renovations at Whitby's Fairview Lodge Home for the Aged at its meet- ing today. The contract is exý pected to go to Tobern Construction Limited 0Of Downsview in, the amount of $2,475,000. The 32-year-old home will be almost totally renovated .,and will in- clude the addition of a new wing, new wash- rooms, re-conditioned electrical and heating systems as well as an improved fire alarm and 111e safety system. This work is being done nearly two years after Dr. W.G. Grant, the home's medical' director, first recomm- ended them after two elderly ýresidents of the home died after an out- break of salmon ella. Whuîle the food poisoning did not cause their deaths, the disease was a contributing factor. When he submitted hits report, Grant said that if such outbreaks were to be avoided in the future Fairview Lodge would have to be brought up to accept- able standards. However, at last Thursday's meeting~ of regional council's finance committee,,not aIl councillors were'in favor of going aliead witli the project which vyw111 cost a total Of $3 Million" when com- pleted. "Spending $3 million to renovate a building is wrong," Regional Coun- icillor Ed Kolodzie (Oshiawa) said. "It 18 just totally wrong. We should put the brakes on and put a hold on this project. We can't afford this." The committee voted 4- to 2, with Oshawa's Doug Wilson siding with Kolodzie, to approve the project. Members of the social services commîttee made a strong case for the project. "The -only landlords who don't update their buildings are those wlio are in it only for -the mo ney," Côuncillor Chris Mason (Oshiawa) commented.1 "We'd be derelict in our duties if we turned this down. " Cost estîmnates made on the project when it cleotfup-of $3 milon.- $1,195,00 0 will come from tax supported debentures. A donation will cover the remaining $255,000. One 0f the big issues ini the project is wash- room - space and, the committee was told that facilities are so inade-, quate at present that -40 people are using one washroom. "Teepeople de- serve some .dignity," Social Services Commi- ssioner Doug. Johnis said. "When this place was built, it was a reason- ably nice place. But now, 32 years have passed anid'it' needs up- dating. Even the provin- cial governent 'came out, str7ongly saying this .rk should be done," headded. When completed, the renovation will see the addition 0f a new wing. However, this wlll flot mean more beds in the facility. According to Johins, the home lias 223 beds and after *the\ work is completed it will 'still haveM23 beds. The rea- son for this is that space is being given to provide more1 washroom space, therefore more beds can hlot be provided. Some councillors have suggested that the region would be 'better off to construet a new home for, the aged, how- ever,- Johins pointed out that a new facility could cost $7 million or more. Should council. ap- prove the tender tqday, construction is expected to commence in June. Completion is expected in June, 1983.
