Siilve. annivers ary of Lofthouse Brass When George Lof t- bouse started Loftbouse Brass 1Manufacturing Limited some 25 years ago, bis first product was a half-inch flare nut - 1a part that bie is still producing today. Since that time, Loft- bouse Brass has been producing brass forging for almost every possi- ble use from plumbing parts to items used for defence purposes. George Lofthouse started, the company in 1957 with only bimself and-an assistant on the payroll. Today, the pay- roll includes more than 70 people at the Hopkins Street plant with '28 more working at the company's Burks Falls facility.' Lofthouse Brass is one of only three Canadian- owned compamies in operation and has been a leader in the field, especiaily in the design ofisown manufactur- ing equipment. The 20,000 square foot plant features 1.200-ton, p resses and -complete machining facilities to '.produce forging weigh- inig-as little as five oun- ces and as heavy, as five pounds. The company also, boasts -a, sales and en- gineering staff that can, provide almost any.ser- vice fromf assistance int prôduet design to'price estimating 'eto tooL design. Aside from brass, the *company has also been involved in. the alumni- nuxn forging field. While this is'the com- pany's 25thanni.*versary year, Lofthouse says that no special activities are planned to celebrate as yet but the company, does intend to re-invest in some new machinery to the tune of $150,000. Although tbe last two' years have been slugg- ish for the firm, Lof t- bouse says that sales are up 20 per cent this year. "This is agoodyear for us," Lofthouse says- adding tbat not only is the company's .export market expanding but that the company wil make 1,000,000 block heater forging for domestic automobiles tbis year. Lofthouse has been elected as a director of both the Canadian Manuifacturers Associa- an experienced tool and <ie designer and because of this back- ground 'was -able to design bis own' shop machinery. Among' the items be designed were a bydraulie powered drill, press and a tbree-, way drill press. However, at the age of 73, be w'ould like to take tbings a little easier but finds that he gets busier every day. 'il still be involved witb tbe coxn- pany wben I'm 80"'lie says. In tact, many Whitby people could find that tbey have Lofthouse plumbing parts in their home and Lofthouse block-heater forginigs in their car. When Dave Lander of Lander Stark Ou retired in' September, 1981, Jack Perry 'took over. the businessto become Perry Fuels Ine., the largiest lonfg-established fuel oil distributorship in the Durham Region. Perry Fuels ne.. wil now' be able to provide a service to customers, perhaps unniatched by other companies of its kind in the area. For in- stance, a five-man night staff wiil' be on duty i n the fuel où1 operation of the business.- 1 The .firm .now bas some 35 employees, with 32 trucks on the road made up of fuel où tank.- trucks, smaller trucks and service vans. While the major pro- duct is.home heating ol,' the firm also 'handles diesel fuels and gasoline for commercial use. Perry Fuels Ine. head office is located at 285 Bloor St. West, Oishawa. The Perry firm also has two marine- storage facilities,. one on Simcoe St. South and the other l.ocated on Harbour Road, w'ith about six million gallons«0 oil. Perry says, " We have the personal, touch as 1 have lived in Oshawa al My life." Stephen Perry, Jack's son, is the secretary- treasurer of the, busi- ness and also drives one of the fleet's tankers. A family'business thrives with the personal touch.- The service depart- ment * is extcptional says Perry. "We have experts in all fields.
