Perhaps the most im- portant factor in. the program, Adamcewicz maintains, is commu- nity and family support. If the patient, for example, does not have a family to support him or her during his time of crisis it will, be necessary to have himf hospitalized. Without the program, most of these people "1would probably have to corne into the. hospi- tai, " Adamcewicz says. Those participating in the program are either in-patients or day care patients at the hospital. ' Adamcewicz describ- ed the 200 or. 50 people currently 'in the pro-. gram as, having 'pro- blemns with "everyday problems." In the program, patients. are not only counselled but taught. to cope with many every- day problems such as nutrition, housekeeping, budgetting, personal hygiene and other thingsmost people take for granted. Most of the time, these people "don't recognize what's hap- pening to them," Adam- cewicz says adding, '"By the time they are in this state of mmnd, they rnay very well be experienc- ing a fear of going to their doctor." And ,co-ordination withthe patient's farnily physician is anôther important factor in the program, according to Dr. B.B. Bardhan, the unit's director. While many of,. the people corne into the program 0of their own accord, often it is the family physician who refers them to the pro- gramy Bardhan says., 1"&Basically, Most '0f our service is a support service," Adamcewicz says, echoing Bardhan who says that the entire programn is voluntary. >"That individual has tW be willing to. corne,"1 she says, "it's totally voluntary." The team of people running the program in- clude a psychologist, a public health nurse, two social' workers and a host of volunteers who help staff the clinics. According, to Bard- han, participation in the program is not an ex- cuse to hide from the community or to with- draw from the work en- vironînent. "They are encour- aged, expected to work in the community,"1 he says, "They are expect- ed to be part of the community."1 Musicians .wanted The Concorclia Pops Orchestra is seeking newx-nembers to play in its groups.
