The interest in sailing has been growing stronger and stronger every year. More and more of our Canadian youth are be- coming anxious to Iearn the skills of sailing. The Whitby Yacht Club is presenting for the fiftb year their out- standing learn-to-sail program for ages 9 to 17, for both girls and boys, for four two-week per- iods during the summer holiday months of July and August. "Set Sail for Sum- mer" is the theme of this junior program and is open to any student and is not restriceted to WYC members. Begin your sailing in a lively Optimist, great for beginners. Then ad-. vance to the CLl4's - jib and mainsail equipped, a great intermediate boat. For the more ad- vanced, there are' the Albacores - a competi- tive class. Racing in these boats can be a lot of fun. Safety is important in boating. Thorough CYA instruction in proper boat handling is stress- ed throughout each course. The WYC Junior Sail has an inflat- able and- a Boston Whaler outboard equipped for safetyand instruction purposes. Led by a qualified CYA (Canadian Yacht- ing Association) senior sailing instructor and CYA instructors and assistants, tbey will teach new sailors the fine arts of boat band- .ling, proper. sailing, rules of the road, proper knots, weather condi- tions and seamanship. From 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, Monday to Friday, the sailing in- struction will be given at The Whitby Yacht Club Junior clubhouse using the junior docks mists, CL14's and Alba- cores for the sailing ex- perience. The registration fee will be $100 for each two- week course. The two: week course is a mini- mum. We strongly recommend four weeks or even more to get ex- tensive sailing exper- ience. The fee -for the second- member of the family is 10 per cent less, or a student is wel- corne to extend bis in-* struction, beyond two weeks for 10 per cent less. The national CYA ap- proved courses lead to CYA White Sail level 1, 2 and 3 and Bronze Sail 4 and 5. CYA manuals are used. Eacb boy or girl must have their own life, jacket, and must be able to swim. The. stan- dards are higb but wor- th the effort., Regattas, keel boat sail and other special eve., Il be featured.
