Many local celebrities including Tom Gibney and Dave Deval of CFTO-TV Toronto were on hand to serve up "Big Macs" to hungry customers in support of a summer camp being held at the Emperor Street Centre in Ajax. The Emperor Street Centre is run by the Ajax Whitby Picker- ing Association for the Mentally Retarded. Here Dave Neilsen, assistant manager of the outlet, is giving a helping hand to the Whitby Free Press acting advertising sales manager Rhonda Foskett and Whitby Deputy Fire Chief Tony VanDoleweerd as they put the dressings on those "Big Macs. The winners are: Stephanie Sears and Marc Lambert, both of Dr. Robert Thornton Public School. Taking second place in the girls' contest was Suzanne Jeppe- sen of St. Theresa's Separate School while Stephanie Rosbottom of E.A. Fairman Public School won third prize. In the boys' contest Tom McDonald took second place while fellow Dr. Robert Thornton Public School pupil Elliot Brown took third. to.hospital Two men were sent to hospital last Wednesday morning after they touched a live wire on a con- struction site on Centre Street North. According to the Durham Regional Police Force, the two men, employees of the Whitby Hydro Elec- tric Commission, were working on an aerial truck when one touched a wire containing 44,000 volts of electricity. Jack Daubney, 32, of Tamarack Court, Oshawa was last reported in stable condition at Oshawa General Hospital after receiving burns to the upper part of his body. His clothing also caught fire. Doug Clarke, 29, of White Oaks Court, Whitby, was treated and released from the hospital after receiving minor burns to his left arm. $2,000 damage.... Rotary Park attacked by vandals Vandals did $2,000 damage to Rotary Centennial Park over the weekend uprooting 150 marigolds and four silver maple trees. According to the Durham Regional Police Force the damage was done sometime Saturday night. Whitby Parks and Recreation Director Wayne DeVeau said Monday morning that he is simply furious over the vandalism and said if the culprits are found, he will prosecute. "I'm furious," he said, "It is one of our premier parks." DeVeau said that the Brock Street South park has received a lot of attention recently not only from town staff but from the local Boy Scout organization which has planted a replica of its logo at the park in celebration of its 75th anniversary. "The whole thing goes down' the tube for nought," he said. The director indicated that four young people on bicycles were seen near the scene. He has also appealed to neighbouring residents to help police the park by reporting any damage that they see done. '"There is a fine of up to $1,000 (for this kind of vandalism) and I will prosecute." DeVeau said. wu- break-min A quick car chase by members of the Durham Regional Police Force resulted in the arrest of three men after a break-in at MacNeil Furniture, 413 Dundas Street East, in the early hours of June 4. The three were arrested on Highway 401 after a police cruiser travelling on Brock Street South saw what police officers on the scene described as the car used at the break-in. According to a spokesman for the force, $400 in cash and assorted articles were taken from the fur- niture store. A search warrant that was executed Monday revealed a numberof articles in the car in- cluding silver trays, crocks, a chest of drawers and other items. Frederick Raymond Parker, 23, of Jones Ave., Toronto; Jeffery Thomas Kelly, 19, of Brice Street, Oshawa; and, Dennis Watson, 22, of Peterborough have been charged with break, enter and theft. They also face similar charges in connection with a break-in the same night at Koke's Shell, Brock Street South. Police report that a two-gallon gas can was stolen. Police also said that one of the suspects gave them the wrong name during their investigation. Watson faces a charge of obstruct police in connec- tion with that incident. The force also said that an arrest warrant has been issued for a fourth man in connection with the break-ins. Parker, Kelly and Watson were all held for bail hearings and should appear in court tomorrow. 44,000 volts...
