WHITBY FREE PRESS,.WEDNESDAY, JULY 14,1982, PAGE 3 O.HS.laoff ma y cause s ervc loss, Batten fears The temporary.lIay-off of the Whltby animal control shelter's super- visor has one local coun-, cillor .concerned .about the level of service pro- vided to the town by the Ontario Hunane Society. Carol Lang, a 10-year employee of the society was laid off on July 1. Shehad been servingf as the shelter's supervisor and receptionist. The receptiomist had loat her job"earlier this year. This meas that there are, only six people run- ming the animal control service which covers not only Whitby but Ajax and Pickering ýas well. Last year at this time, the service had 14 employees., North Ward Council- lor Ross Batten, the town's representative on the Pickering-Ajax- Whitby (P.A.W.) com- mittee said last week that concerns are being raised over the society's level of service.' "IAil we know is that Carol Lang was laid Off," he said asking "is the level of service as promised in our agree- ment going to be up- held?" "As of now, I don't know," he added. .Earlier this year, the towns. of Whitby,_ Ajax and Pickering purchas- ed the animal control shelter on Thickson Tubs.. Road North and took over animal control and leased it back to the On- tario Humane Society. Under that agree- ment, the O.H.S. was obliged to meet a speci-. fied level of service and covered ail areas of the society's work including staffing. Batten said that a let- ter has been sent to the society via town clerk Don McKay's office but no reply had been re- ceived. "If we don't get satis- factory answers we're ~going to get Our commit- tee together and deal with this, " he said. The councillor also pointed out that, the three ,miunicipalities "aei ow i the driver's wanted Do you have an old bathtub that you don't need? According to board président Margaret Boyce, the Kinsmen Club nèeds two or three more tubs for their third annual bathtub race which will be held July 25 at 1 p.m. in the new marina area of the Whitby Harbor. "gWe have some very stringent levels of ser- vice," Batten said, "We wrnl make sure that the levels 0-f service- are met." Hover, he admits he has no cause for taklng any actionagain- st the society now, but that doesn't mean bhis concerns are invalid. "When I see two peo- ple laid off since' the signing of the agree- ment, I have concerns, " he said adding, "I'm wondering where is that coverage coming from." Batten also expressed personal concern for Lang and said she did an excellent job in running the shelter. I"We felt she held.it altogether," he said. However, society exe- cutive vice-president Tom Hughes said last week that the level of service wlll not go down and that the O.H.S. will meet its 'obligations. Hughes said .tfiat Lang's lay-off was one Of many across the pro- vince and was the result 0f ýthe "ltight situation" the society finds itself in financially.. .He claimed that general'revenues from donations were lower than last year and blamed' that on the "Four!f" Bob Attersley is driving off the first tee to officially open the Win- ýolf Club. ab boasts Whitby's newest golf course and is located on Winchester st in Brooklin. Questions about the society's management were raised in the Ont- ario Legisi ature and eventually the, solicitor general ordered an in- vestigation. The ac- counting firm of Price Waterhouse ýand Com- pany said in its report that while the society had 1.management problems at the top it could find no evidence of wrongdoing. But this doesn't mean the P.A.W. committee won't take action if they feel the local situation is undesirable.. "We won't hesitate to if we feel we're being jerked around,," Batten said. "If we sense there is some reason to take action then we certainly will."l However, he said'that the society will be given the chance to 'explain their actions. 'II think we owe them that. much; he added. "Let them convince us they can meet the situa- tion."
