Mayor Bob Attersley revealed last weok that ho bas'been nogotiating with Itwo American int- orests to dovelop .the property for the last four montbs. The "coming soon mo- tel" is located on »Thick- son. Road South on the north end of the High- way 401 interchange and la a half-completed structure that was oni- ginally designed to be a Howard Johnson's Motel Hotel., Ç onstruction- on the eight-acre site began in the early 1970's. It was built by Greatèl' Whitby Properties Limited. Attersley said that if ho is successfui in arranging a deal Wo sel the land and develop it. as a hotel,'the present structure would bave to be demolished. .The mayor indicated tbat project *111 probab- ly be a joint venture of two firms - one operat- ing out of New York City and the other out of Washington, D.C. "They bave ail our in- formation and IPm nego- tiating," Attersley said pointing out tbat the zoming is already in place and that the inter- change wWl be, recon- structed later this year. The Ontario Ministry of. Transportation and Communications began the reconstruction of the. ramps last year. and At- tersley la confident that it wil give botter access to the property once completed. "'Tbat interchange la going to compliment it even more," ho said. The land is currently ownod by Greater Whit- by Equity of Toronto and Attersley believes that smnce construction stopped it bas cbanged hands about five times. .The mayor al180s said that the site lias been a thorfi in bis side sinco ho took office two years ago. " Wbile ho would flot say who 'ho was nego- tiating with, Attersley did describe it as a "fairly prominent" hotel chain. "Smnce I've been in of- fice, it's the best lead I've had." Attersley also indicat- ed that if the American, interests are serious about developing the site ho will make atrip to New York City some-- time iSeptember to continue negotiations. At present, Durham Region bas- only two hotels Iocated with, direct access to Higli- way 401. They are the Flying Dutchman Motel Hotel in Bowmanville and the Holiday Inn An Oshawa. The Town of fickering is currently sçeking an amendment to the Durham Region officiai plan to allow-for a hotel to be built in its industrial area bor- dering the freeway. According t0 the Dur- ham Regional Police Force, Stephen Carlisle, 17, of Kent Street was walking along Dundas Street near Byron Street at about 10:30 pa. when a car travelling south on Byron Street wont out of control and went over the curb On Dundas Street. Police also said- that the victim was struck twice, the second timo when -the car reversed before leaving the scene. A short time later,- the driver was arrested in the Town of Pickering.
