I wvould like to ex- press my strong Dear Sir: With reference to your editoria! of July 21, I was disap- pointed to read that you were less than enthusiastic with the Durham Board of Education's pro- posed discipline policy. It would be completely unrea- listic to say that any policy can, by itself, solve aillof thé dis- cipline problems in our schools. This new policy is a strong and positive feelings about the four presentations in last week's paper. Mayor Bob Atter- sley and Mrs. Grace Pritchard both spoke (at the din- ner) of their con- cerns for the man- ner in which the news media empha- sizes bad news over f irst step. Right from the beginning it stresses the rights and responsi- bilities of all per- sons in the school community. it states as one of its primary goals, "the development of a ,sense of responsi- bility and self-disci- pline in students ... as well as a respect for dignity and wel being of others." The proposed po- licy outlines in de- tail what is expect- good. Unfortunately the Whitby Free Press has doné just that despite the fact that your reporter was there and heard those comments. Your varlous head- lines make a mockery out of good and serlous Intentions by the chamber to make a ed of the'students. it aieo states what ls expected of staff, including an aware- ness of "their col- lective responsibili- ty in determining the atmosphere of the school." The policy continues by stating what is ex- pected of the Board of Education. This includes providing- opportunities for professional deve- lopment, legal sups CONT'D ON PG. 6 prestiglous award to deserving per- sons. We do appreciate the constructive observations that were made in the editorials. But use of such words as 'circus' and 'dis- graceful' detract from the otherwise positive comments made. We realize that there .are pro- blems to overcome, however, the. tone of these words and the cartoon do nothing to help rec- tify the situation. Mr. Publisher you have been a cham- ber director and president. I do not have to tell you how hard the Chamber works in many ways to promote the Image of the town and its business community (of which you are also a meiber). The chamber events and affairs are con- ducted by a sincere group of volunteer businesspeople. These people have only the best interests of the community in mind. That does not mean that they are perfect and that every effort will be supremely successful. We ail learn from our mis- takes. And we ail appreciate con- structive criticism if it is properly pre- sented. The Peter Perry Award will con- tinue. Some useful Ideas have been and wIll be present- ed. i bellove that the outcome will be an even better attend- ed, better present- ed and, hopefully, better publicized event.
