* .L.. - WHITBY. FREE-PRESS,1 WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 8,,1982, 'PAGE <9 Betwe en Yo ul.' and>Me By !RUTHI COLES What funny phone calis we do get at our home. Not strange but just funny. "Aie you the girl 1, talkedffwth Fridaynight?"l asks a young maie, " did you, have a mauve blouse on?" A young- woman calls to ask "DVol you, have Jullus. Caesar there?! My standard reply without asking a question is, "I arn sorry this is.not Coles Book Store." Oftenem- barrassed laughter and a quick -bang-up. They neyer question -the fact that they don't hear us say as we pick Up the receiver, "Tisis Coles Book Store may we help you?" Are you seeing great flocks of Canada geese fly- ing about overhead?' They are everywhere and I think tbey are flying from bodies of water to and fr0 to the grain fields. Somneone askedme ýif I had seen the bald eagle, near the lake; I bave not as yet. 1 wonder if any of the bird watcbersà have? There are lots >of ducks about and less sounds'of shot this year tbank goodness. If people aretruly hungry I wish tbem good hunting, but not just for the sport itself.- Nature as a rule takes care of an over abundance of most living things and does-not often need our help. But as, the hunters say, better to die by a single shot tban to starve to death over a long period 0f time. Maybe they are rigbt. What an interesting time we had one day this week with an old friend who was here on a flying visit from France. He bas given up his career with the BBC in Lon- don, England to become a botel owner in Beauvray, in the region of Burgandy, France. One cannot sit with pen and pad whlle reminiscing with a friend. After being told just wbere it is I am unable to, even find it on the map try as I have. It's a country hotel south of Paris in fishing and skilng country with won derful walking trails.', What a change 0f. pace after busy, bustlinig Lon- don and ail tbe glamour of the show world and so many varied experiences with the BBC to, owning a amail hotel. 1In France, as ini most of Europe, you do flot just ow n<and manage the hotel. You are a host in every sensle 0fthe word and you "care" for your guests. This cbap bas a beautiful English accent and he is a gentleman born and bred. I can imagine bis inn, warm, cosy, cbarming and just bursting with at-, mosphere.. Over the years I bave enjoyed some great cooking he bas done., This is often a hobby of bachelors and -wbat a 'gourmet he is, a lover of and connoisseur of delicaçies in the food Uine and wine.ý He does ail the cooking in this smail hotel himself and in France there are always five or six courses. Can you imagine how bis mmnd can run riot in this field? He told us, though, that it is mostly regional cookinig as it is so often ail over the world. .The hotel is in the country andbis kind and belpful- neighbours are peasants who accept him, witb noble grace. Shopping is done on a daily basis for food as you walk about with a string bag or basket. His guests include Canadians, Americans and Germans to name a few. Fishing in season is popu- lar and cross-country skiing in the winter time and walking, a favourite pastime of most Europeans, is a favourite for most concerned.* We asked many questions *about aIl manner of tbings including their cancer and heart disease rate. Much' less, we were told, and we ail wondered why. Is it their way.of life including their diet, the practice of Homeopathy which is stiil in good stan- ding as it is in England. I have written about this healing art which began in the eigbteeii-bundreds and is now making a comeback in North America. Who knows? Someday when we go across the sea again we may learn more. and have some of our questions answered. PETER JOSEPH w!
