PAGE 14, WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 15, 1982, WHITBYTREE PRESS Between- By RUTH C(04ES The Whitby 1983.1985.Inaugural Council Meeting bas corne and gone,, a very successful occas ion for Mayor Attersley and members of Council. ,Many people turned out and- enjoyed themselves froni start to, finis h. Much laughter, .congenial coni- versation, godfd and drinkewhile a sing song, went'onfaclompianied by an organ. We al look forward to three year s of good govern- mnent and hopefully the upheat atti tude will remain. This is sornething which pays off these days, loo king abead tio'good things not, jjst >t lking dooni and gloom. Governing a town'such as ours is not the easiest tbing in the world. Rapid growtb, a downturn in the economyand changing tumes'takes its toil. An atti- tude whicb is more than parochial is needed. We are no longer a smail, isolated placebut a town on the edge of a huge metropolitan city whicb wil no doubt keep expanding as'tbe years go by. At this tiue I would like to take my bat off to our East Ward Councillor, Joe Drumni. I bave watcbed- Joe's career with great' interèst. -He is a dedicated, sincere, bard, working man who gives bis .ail. Not being one to ever.caîl a professional person wben not on "duty", or as'in this case our Councilman Joe, I broke the rule on a Good Friday several years ago. Friends of', ours were very concerned andupe about an "occurrence" celose. to their home, some-' thing wbich could 'affect many people. Sometbing, had to be done quickly; the town offices were closed Fand my only, thougbt was cal Joe Drumi., I cailed bum about ten on tbat Good Friday morn- ing. Witbin about ten minutes be was on, the spot and bad contac ted' several people wbo arrived a short tume'later. The probleni was solved whicb could not bavebeen done without Joe. Beyond theeal] of do uty? I tbink so. Even a member of coundil deserves a rest on a religious holiday. And Joe's farnuly are concerned and help- fui too. Nan, his wife, 18 ever ready, always patient and thoughtful. -Shawn, their son, lis a favourite of mine and always 80 very well spoken. What a difference a volce majces. If young people only realized'what an impression 18 ýgiven by their tone 'of volce -an& welI chosen words when address- ing someone or answering, the phone. Often a lasting impression too'. I Lwonder how many people in Whltby see the sun rise in the, morning'and 'especially over'the lake? There are no words to'describe the beauty.- Often spectacular, always beautiful, neyver the sani'e as the brilliant colours and hues, vary, froni day to day. This year we seem to see less sunshine ail the timfe. This can be understood'if there is a Storm' in the offing but howmany storms do we get on a mon- tbly basis? Pale shades of pink a re seen as the sun begins' to rise on the horizon until minutes later the colour is vivid, either a glorious rose or à bright'orange, rarely a pure red. ,To :the north'of the rising sun are dark'clouds, greys and nav' blues. The contrast is startling and often bliniding as you'rook to the south. Lately, however, this spectacular show only, lasts for a short while and then the wvhole sky dresand becomes overcast. in our location we miss most of the sunset until this tme of th e yearý as the sun sets mfore to the South inthe winter. What we do ses now is glorious, the lake a beautiful' gold, sometimies pink and then as darkness cornes often navy blue. Someone asked me if I had, ever 'seen a "blue" goose at the harbour. I ha ven't but I'm sure many people have seen it and know it as the Snow Goose. CHRISTMAS PARTY .An exciting Cbristmas party wilI again bigh- Iight the festive season for the members of, the DÙrham Stroke, Recovery Association.
