The four-year-old organization exists to help the Big Brothers agency in special events and fund-raising. But it is also a support group for single mothers and wives of big brothers. Most of the 20- member group consists of wives and niothers, but president fris Eh- Top New Democratic Party officiais will gather to roast and toast Federal NDP leader Ed Broadbent March 12 in Oshawa. .The occasion marks Broadbent's fifteenth year as MP for Oshawa, and his eighth year as leader of the federal party. It is also Broad- bent's 47th birthday. Among the speakers will be Manitoba Premier Howard Paw- ley, who has led that province since Novem- ber 1971. Pawley will be joined at the head table by On- tario NDP leader Bob Rae, Oshawa MP Mike Breaugh, Ontario mke stresses that even those not directly in- volved in Big Brothers. are welcome to join the group. "It's a chance for women to talk to other women who are going through the same things, " Ehmke says. The group meets once a month for three hours to socialize and plan special events. Mem- bership in the auxiliary is free. A semînar on self de- fence against rape is Federation of Labour President Cliff Pilkey, Bob White, Canadian Director of the United one special event coming up onl March 9. The seminar is free and open to ail interested women, and Dave Dob- son will be the instruc- tor. The Big Brother's Ladies Auxiliary is also holding its annual fund- raising bazaar at Oshawa Centre Feb. 25 and 26. Everything at the bazaar was either made by auxiliary members or donated by wives of big brothers and mothers of the boys. The Whitby Toast- mistress Club celebrat- ed its third birthday Feb. 15 with the theme, "A time for remem- brance". The meeting was chaired by vice president Shirley Mac- Donald, who had the dual role of chairman and Toastmistress for the speaking program. Two Grade 13 stu- dents, who were among seven student guests at the meeting, have ap- plied for membership in the club. Mary Aspinaîl, Coun- cil Two President, pre- sented a workshop on gestures, which 'was- humourous as well as educational. Several club mem- bers have been assisting school classes in Whitby in coaching speakers for the Optimist Club speaking contest. Nadia Gosghach,. a Grade 5 student who is entering the contest, attended the meeting. Lee Irwin presented a speech on "reflections". The speech was a beau- tiful word picture of the club's history.
