The Whitby Chamber of Commerce is looking for interested citizens to help plan the first Marigold Festival to be held from Sept. 8 to il. The festival will re- place the County Town Carnival as Whitby's biggest festival event, and organizers hope to make it an annual fal festival. The chamber held its first organizational meeting Feb. 9, when committees were select- ed to manage the festi- val. So far, organization of the event is in the hands of about 25 people who represent various town organizations and clubs. The group decided at its meeting the main ob- jetive of the festival is to hold a special event for the citîzens of Whit- by which will celebrate the marigold as the town's symbol through total community sup- port and participation. The Marigold Festival was planned for the second week of Septem- ber in order to tie in with a festival already plan- ned by Cullen Gardens. Organizers will incor- porate events already planned by Cullen Gar- dens, such as an antique car show, and balloon rides, with new e'ýents planned by the commit- tee. Ethnic dances, a demolition derby, a go- kart grand prix and tours of the gardiens are being planned by the organîzers. The general manage- ment of the event is in the hands of Howard Smith, past president of the Chamber of Com- merce, Brian Winter, the Chamber's secre- tary, Owen Hachey, Jack Woodward, Joan Wesley and Lynda Buf- fet of the Chamber. Bob Adams of the Royal Canadian Legion and John Wiggers of the Lions Club, as well as Garvin 'Parr and Mike Roantree Y. from the Whitby Th'eatre- com- pany will sit on the committee. David Glover of the Kinsmen Club, Harold O'Brien fromn the Senior's Activity Centre and Wayne deVeau from the Town of Whit- by complete ' the management commit- tee. An events committee will consist of Owen Hachey, Len Lambert, Wayne DeVeau, Garvin Farr, Wanda Martin, Mandy Crawford and a representative of the Whitby Jaycees. -Other committees formed at the meeting were finance, inter- group liaison and publi- city committees. Besides the Cullen Gardens location, the group plans to hold a downtown parade and make use of Rotary Park for somne events. Ail 723-9930. High'sehools hold drama festival The high schools in Durham Region will be holding- their sixteenth annual Drama Festival on March 3, 4 and 5 at G.L. Roberts Collegiate and Vocational Institute in Oshawa. It is one of twenty-five such festi- vals held throughout the province each year to provide a showcase for the dramatic talents of students and teachers. Student achievemnent at the festival wiI be recognized in the pre- sentation of awards pro- vided by Sears Limited, sponsor of the Ontario- wide festival. These will be given for outstanding productions, outstand- ing performances,. and outstanding technical achievement. There is also an ad- judicator's award, which may be presented to an individual or group. In addition, the adjudicator may select a number of deserving students to - receive Awards of Merit for ac- ting or other theatnical achievement. The winners of, the Durham Festival will be invited to participate in the 0.C.D.F.
