The goal of the program Westl"by 198"86,100% of the studenta who gr- aduate from secondary school wiil have had an opportunity to take a course in computer lit- eracy, that la, in com- puter science, data pro- ceaaing or units on com- puters within other coures."p To this end, a three pronged approach was launched. First, staff were given the opportu- nity to qualify te teach computer related cour- ses. Courses were esta- bliahed at an awareness level, introductory pro- gramming level, ad- vanced .programming level and finally at a machine lahguage pro- gramming level. To date, 300 elementary and 250 secondary teachers have taken a total of 650 courses to upgrade their skills. The second thrust was to develop course curri- culum to be used in the classroom. At the pre- sent time, courses have been completed or are nearing completion in computer science grades il and 12, and computer awareness for grade 10. By September 1983, revised courses wil be available for data processing grades il and 12 and course modules in techniology grades il and 12. The final phase of the plan was to acquire equipment. Again, a Phase-i period was establiahed. At present, 190 micro-computers are i use in our secon- dary achools plus an ad- ditional 50 for support and training within the system. These are sup- ported by peripheral equipment such as disk drives, printers, cas- sette recordersand ar- bitor link up systema.
