Rotary Choir sings at International convention The Whltby Rotary Choir was honored this week to have been in- vlted to sing at the open- lng plenary session of the Rotary Internation- ai Convention belng held lnir oronto. The Whltby choir sang a twenty minue program to get the convention under- way at Maple Leaf Gar- dens and also led the thousands of Rotarlans gathered at the sports palace ln an opening simg-song. The choir, organized i 1975, has sung ln 8ev- eral area churches and for various groups in the Whtby-Oshawa district and- lias appeared at Rotary District Con- ferences i Toronto and Belleville on several oc- casions, but their ap- pearance at this week's convention lias been their most thrllllng ex- perlence thus far. Led by Director Dr. Reg Davis, with Miss Margaret Webber as accolnpanist, the chorus sang a varled programn whlcli lncluded numbers to emphasze the Iter-- nationallty of Rotary whlch la found ln 157 countries of the world. Aznong their songs were a Newfoundland sea shanty, the Welsh tradi- tional number, Men of Harlech, Let There Be Peace On Earth, and their customary open- ing of Rotary Men Are We and Stout-Hearted Men. A highllght of the program was the first public performance of a song wrltten especially for the occasion by Dr. Davis, Hall To Thee, Canada! The chorus continues a long tradition of sing-" ing -in the Whltby club whlch 18 noted in Rotary circles for is musical talents. The club for many years produced an annual minstrel show which was followed by a serles of variety con- certs known as the Rotary Revue and the Rotary Faies. Part of the club's enthuslasm for music and slnglng no doubt stems from the dedicated pianisis who have served the club down through the years. Among those who have served' are several names well known in local musical circles. Jim Rainnie, Rev. Stan Osborne, A17an Clarke, Walter Pamenter, Norman Mould, Robin Nicholson and Margaret Webber have provided leadership with the last two each serving over twelve years. The chorus does in- clude non-Rotarians and welcomes anyone who enjoys singing. The Toronto appearance was the finale for the season, but rehearsals will begi'i Septembeý and an announcement wiI be made of the date and time, and new members are most, welcome. High honour bestowed The Rotary Club of Whitby has bestowed Rotary's highest honor on one of its most senior members, Harry Town, namig him' a Paul Harris Fellow. The prestiglous award, named after Rotary's- founder was presented last, week in recognition of 28 years of dedicated and devot- ed service in which the honored Rotarian had served- on every major committee i the club, had acted as chairman of many committees and important projects and served on the Board of Directors for several terms. In presenting the award on behalf of the, Whitby Rotary Club, Rotarian Neil Murkar told the large gathering of Rotarians and their Rotary Ami wives, that the award was being given to one who had been the "Ideal Rotar- ian", working quietly but effectively in the. service of others. He stressed the fact that founder Paul Harris repeatediy noted the fact that Rotary's strength was to be found i the dedicated service of members at the club level. Rotarian Murkar also emphasized that the- Whitby Rotary- Club was proud to have a member who for nearly forty years had served this conununity. as a funeral director, provid- ig an essential service wlth dignity and com- passion, earning the re- spect of ail those who knew him. The Rotary Club of Whitby which recently celebrated ts Sth anni- versary has had a mem- ber of the Town family i its membership sice the club"began. Claren- ce Town, father of the newly named Paul Harris Fellow, Joied the club one week after it was formed i 1933 and continued as a valued member until has death, and nephews Jim and John have also been members continuing a tradition of Rotary membership lasting a half century. Earlier this year the club had named Harry Town an Honorary Member when i11 health forced his resignation from Active Member- slip. Rotary, the first service organlzation of ts kind, was formed in 1905 and an» important feature of is structure las been the Classifica- tion priciple whlch allows one person from' each business, trade and profession as a member. A humourous high- light of the occasion came wlth a surprise presentation by Rotar Ann Myrtle Conrad who noted that the new Paul Harris fellow lad always been a "star" of the Rotary Ballet, a fea- ture of the Rotary Revue shows whlcl suc- ceeded the annual Rotary Minstrel Show in 1964 and continued on tlrough until the mid- seventies. As a momen- to of those hilarlous pro- ductions he wasCpresent- ed witl lis ballet "cos- tume". The new recipient of Rotary's highest and most coveted honoris the ninth to be bonored by the Whitby Rotary Club for outstandlng service. Others to have received Feilowshlps are Geo. A.
