DON CORNEIL AUCTIONEER R..1 LITTLE BRITAIN 705-788-2183 Agriculturai Exhibition The Oshawa-Whltby Agricultural Exhibition went ahead this past weekend and while many enjoyed events such as a demolition derby, old tirne fiddlers contest, tractor and truck pull, as well as varjous exhibits and rides, others just spent the day in the beer tent. Earl Cochrane, of Blackstock, is pictured with bis five-year-old commercial horse as he prepares for the heavy horse competition. Cosgrove suggests new plan by Paul Cosgrove Minister of State for Finance Prices on the Toronto Stock Exchange recently rose to their highest closing level in history. Market analysts are saying the market is set for another long term climb. Add to this, the fact that Canadians are among the world's best money savers and the decline in in- terest rates on savings accounts. Many Canadians might ha looking for other ways to put their money to work for them. In the recent budget, your national government bas offered one alternative in its Indexed Shareholders Investment Plan, or ISIP. The proposaI would not only provide a way for Canadians te put their money to work for them- selves but for Canada as well, by providing a new way to invest ifftanadian companies and ha protec- ted from inflation at the same Urne.* The plan wil also aid Canadian companies which require new funds te expand and compete, as well as create Jobs. John Bossons of the Financial Post calls ISIP: "ian important tax break for the individual in- vestor." The principal advantage of ISIIP is it will proteet Canadians who investi Canadian companies fromn being taxed on the portion of the increase in the value of their stock that is due toinflation. -- The basic mnechanles 0f the plan are qulte stralghtforward. For example, assume that an Ï:. vestor buys $1,000 in stocks at the beginning of the year and they increase in value to $1,100 by the end of the year. With the ISIP plan and an inflation rate of six per cent over the year, their value would ha considered to be $1,060. The capital gains eligible for tax would ha only $40. If the sbares were purchased outside ISIP ail of the $100 increase in the value of the securities would ha recognized as a capital gain when they were eventually sold. ISIP also increases the amount of capital los recognized for tax purposes. If the same securities were worth only $900 at the end of the year. instead of the original $1,000, the loss would still ha calculated including inflation, or $1,060. The resuit would ha a tax deduction of $160, even though the loss of the original value of the shares is only $100. To go into effect in Octohar, the I51F can ha set up for you'by any broker, dealer, trust company or mutual fund. Only publicly traded common shares of Canadian companies and related investments are eligible. Another attractive feature of the 151F is that tax- payers will spread the tax on capital gains over several years. We know Canadians want te plan for a secure future, shielded against inflation. The Indexed Shareholders Investment Plan provides one way for them te invest in their own economlc future, while at the lame Urne lnvestlng i Canadian companles for a mSue Canadian economy. .4 -. .i-~~ THE CORPORATION 0F1 THE TOWN0F WHITBYj CHOO COU NTRY AUCTION Sat.
