Report firom Q ueen' s Park By The l10n. George Aslie, IPP (le(- Iurharn West) Minster of Governinent Services On Thursday, Nov. 24, a Private Member's BUil- Nuclear Arins Free Zone - was debated in the On- tario Legisiature. I would like to take this opportunity to discuss this Private Member's Bill, which stated,. "That, in the opinion of this House, the province of Ontario, Canada, should declare itself a nuclear arins free zone, and the governiment should prohibit the deployment of nuclear weapons and associated equipment in' the province, the construction of nuclear weapons and associated equipinent, the transport of nuclear weapons and associated equipment, the transport of nuclear weapons and associated equipment through and' within the province, and the'export of goods and materials for use in the construction and deployment of nuclear arms. In addition, the province should encourage cities, provinces and states tbrougbout the world to lnitiate similar action." TÉhe threat of nuclear war is recognized by al of us, and recent media coverage of protests, demon- strations, and, indeed, presentation of the filmn "The Day After"l heigbtens our concern. It is my belief that neither- side is *for war, or against peace, but perhaps the method 0f, main- taining peace is where we differ. It isn't at ail sur- prising that in response -to the. tension and uncer- tainty,- millions of people in the West are joining together in what many perceive to be the last chan- ce to crusade for world peace., I would like to share some of the thoughts raised in this debate by my coileague, AI' Kolyn, 1%P Lakeshore - "The resolution beéfore us today 18 one responseto the, tensions which have been created by this massive build-up of Soviet miitary power ... it represents a ýmisguided but weil-intentioned ap- proach which wiil do nothing to m aintain the peace, nor to, encourage efforts at multi-lateral disar- mament. History has shown that passivism and ap- peasement do. nothing to avert- war, nor to discourage aggressor nations." SThis does not mean that the government mem-, bers,. joined by il liberal members, in opposing. the resolution3 are indicating that tbey are for nuclear.ý war, but rather that we must be willing to take the steps necessary, to protect ourselves and to main- tain this deterrent. Approximately ,$250,- 000 is stil needed to reacb the goal of the United Way Campaign bas set to achieve. To date, $1,346,444 0f- a target 0f $1,595,000 has been .reached. - Bfi Henry, Campaign Chairman, is bopeful that the citizens of Oshawa and Whitby will respond in a fashion which will put the cam- paign over the top. GM public employees of Oshawa, Wbitby'and Newcastle have raised $111,535, 1 percent over their objective of $110,000., The GM- employees have raised $80,500 of their goal -0f $778,400, with contributions still coming in. GM par- ticipation has been out-, standing, in the, United Way Campaignwith ,81 percent employee in- volvement. The resolution whicb was presen- ted before the Legisiature on Tbursday would, in mhy vlew, compromise our security and ultlmately compromise the opportunity for world peace. As my colleague incicated, "the international political system is sucb that the chances of the meek inherlting the earth are very slim. Rather, we live i an environment in which the dictum "Peace tbrough strength" b as much to recommend It.P" We must neyer again use "The Neville Cham- berlain Approach"l, wblch history indicates gave Nazi Germany the "encouragement" that helped to precipitate the conflict of the Second World War.
