NEWCOMERS The February general meeting of the Oshawa-' Whitby Newcomers Club will be held on Feb. 14 at 8 p.m. at Westmin- ster Church, Manning Rd., Whitby. .The guest speaker wil Between You and Me By RUTH COLES Abortion does not belong i the political arena. It's a private rlght, like many other rlghts concernlng the family. Bella Abzug Condoms, mugs and pens, giveaways from the Health Department of the City of Toronto. Balder- dash, hogwash and many other uncomplementary words which are unprintable. To say we are ap- pailed by this latest gimmick is to understate the whole thing. To write what I really think is impossible; the words just don't corne out. I have taiked with many people about this, men and women, young and old. We ail agree and feel the state has no right to enter into this sort of thlng. There are, no doubt, many unfit parents i the world. So be it, this is what 111e is ail about but unfor- tunately the offspring have to suffer. Government intervention will not affect these people; they wil go on their merry way taking ail they can get with no thought for the morrow. Is there such a thing as right and wrong these days? Anything seems to go. Are eiders setting a good example to the young ones? "Do as 1 say, don't do as I do". Things don't work this way. Every young person needs direction, a good example and respect for authority, in this case parental authority. Do we bring our lives down to the barnyard or gut- ter level or should we uplilt the young and help them to make good lives for themselves? We hear ten-year-olds are having sex. Why? It's a fact that the sex drive is a powerful one fromf an early age often to a very old age. It is not something Bridge resuits The following are the resuits of last week's play at -the ,Whitby. PAGE 9 - which fades away. Like many things in this world it is somethlng which must be directed and respon- sibillty taken for. For many today there wlll be years of activity and a lot of the blame can go to dogooders for wont of a botter name. We could name them but wiil refrain rather than generalize about certain groupe. How easy and very simple it is to sit at a desk or take pen in hand and let go. As for sex education, what benefits have there been? More pregnancies than ever and more disease. We hear stories which don't bear repeating but out there things seem to be going wrong. Extremes can be dangerous and now we are at one end 0f the scale; when wil it ever stop; Birth control bas been available for 50 years or more, safe manageable birth control. Not clinics for the children nor were there corner stores as I saw in England. Good doctors were able to advise and direct but maybe 15-year-olds would hesitate to visit one especiaily their mother's obstetrician. Now we have the popular pastime of abortion discussions. For most of us it is repugnant and dreadful. For others it is a way of 111e. Is it better for a fetus to die or a child to be not cared for, neglec- ted, maybe starved, hit-and injured, thrown to the wail or buried alive? These things happen and wor- se. Some people are not fit to be parents and others are not capable of even looking after themselves. Others have their own reasons and if they feel they should destroy the li1e within them they may be rigbt. The right to 111e must be tempered by the kind of alie. This is determined by the quality of 111e. TÈo have a proper place and doctor to perform these operations seems like commonsense to me. 0f course they make money doing this but so do the undercover- ones. You eertainly couldn't expect them to do it for nothing. Let's put the thing into a proper perspective instead of becoming emotional and foolish about it. For those who want an abortion they'll find an abortionist somewhere and it maybe at great cost to themselves physically. So instead 0f putting the cart before the horse lets guide the children the proper way s0 that the need for them to abort wil disappear. Let's leave the sex thing to the parents, the wise and the unwise and let the chipe fail where they may. Other than parents, many children have good friends somewhere whom they respect and can turn to. We demand more and more from government, some do but there are many of us who want less. Let us chart our own course and take sex away from al of those who are involved now or at least let them keep their own sexuality but stay out of our young people's lives.
