Free Press Staff Photo Town program* will give j*obs to 19 students The Town of Whitby's parks and recreation department will provide 19 students with sum- mer employment this. year. Last week, council authorized recreation director Wayne DeVeau to apply for $57,851 in federal government grants to cover the bulk of the employment costs. The town will provide $8,600 to make up the rest of the costs. The students will be employed in -six dif- ferent programs. Five 0f them will be used in "Operation Clean-up" a effort to remove debris -from the 144 miles of rivers and streams that run through the town. Another three young people will be hired .to man "Come Discover Whitby"p - a projeet to attract visitors* to the town. The students wil conduct community tours, travel exhibits and will be on hand at the Tourist Information Centre to respond to visitors' questions. "Operation Beaver", will employ four more students in the development and in- stallation of a fitness trail at D'Hillier Park. Underprivileged chil- dren wil visit tourism and educational 'sites through the Durham Region Metropolitan Toronto area under the supervision of five students working under the department's "Travelling Day Camp" program. The department will also hire two students to conduet two different in- formation gathering projeets. 'One project wil concern déveloping an inventory of existing parks, the needs of new parks and collecting data for future com- puter applications. An industrial, engineering student willl be hired to complete a planned ,preventative maintenance system for recreation facilities and to conduct a time and motion study on the town's part-tume work 140 SUMCOE ST. According to the Durham Regional Police Force, $100 damage was done to one of the vehicles when the front door was pried open. Stolen was -a cassette deck valued at $500. From the other vebicle, stereo equip- ment and speakers valued. at $380 was taken. Police declined to speculate whether or not the two incidents are related.' Thieves got away with over $3,000 worth 0f merchandise'from two Burns St. homes last Tuesday night. According to a spokesman for the Durham Regional Police Force, two neighbouring -town- houses were entered through the rear doors. (Jus!
