Thfe exhibition con- sists of paintings on canvas and works on paper mceluding prints and watercolors. Ait- werger worked for several years in silkscreen printing and used the landscape as her source of imagery for *lier work. Even- tually her work became comnpletely non- objective and she star- ted to, work 'in various media. Altwerger, 42, studied at the Ontario Coilege of Art, the Seong Moy School of Painting and Graphie Arts in Provin- cetown, Mass. and at the Instituto Allende in Mexico. She bas also, taught at both the On- tario College of Art and at Centennial College. Suicide prevention Suicide prevention wil be the focus of an upcoming public forum sponsored by the Distress Centre of Durham Region 4djrixig Suicide Prevention Week. Entitled "Suicide: it touches us ail", the forum wii be held May 16 at 8 p.m. in the U.A.W. Hall at 44 Bond St. E. in Oshawa. Panehists will include Nancy Handleigh, the director of the Distress' Centre; Doug Hum- phries, a suicide sur- vivor; Peggy Ridgeway, of Mental Health Durham; Bif Johnson, a broadeaster with CHOO radio; Paul Barry, an ambulance attendant; and, June White of the Central Ares Dispatch. Suicide continues to be a leading cause of death in our society. According to the Chief Coroner of Ontario, 36 men and 10 women took their own lives in the Durham Region during 1983. "Many of these people could have been helped" , says Nancy Handieigh, director of the Distress Centre.
