But it also brings bugs, weeds and diseases that at- tack our crops, lawns and gardens. There are a wide range of chemical products many of us use to fight these pests. Pesticides are an in tegral1 part of both urban and rural life. Some es8ential For agriculture they are essential. Production would drop drastically because of insect damage, weed infes- tations and outbreaks of diseases. Some crops would he impossible to grow in Canada. But pesticides are also used to protect ourselves from mosquitoes and other biting insects. Whenever using pesti- cides, it is vital that we take the proper precautions. These are outlined clearly on the product's label. Agriculture Canada is re- sponsible for regulating al pesticides in Canada, and we take this responsibility very seriousÉly. Each prod- uct you find on store shelves hasbeen studied ex- tensively by experts at my department, Health and Welfare, Environment and. Fisheries and Oceans. Each pesticide is tested for its safety to humans, wild- life and the environment. 1 think wehavetobereal- istic about pesticides. No one can provide iron-ciad guarantees thatevery pesti- cide is completely safe under ail circumstances. Ail are poisons, as are many other household products we use, and must be treated as such. But we at Agriculture Canada can only go so far. The main risk in pesticide use is in improper handling or misuse. By reading the instruc- tions on the label carefully, and following them, we can ail continue Vo enjoy the benefits of high quality food and pest-free living.
