Last week was Public Works Week in Whitby and the department held an open house at the Taunton Rd. depot. Over 350 school children were given a tour of the ýdepot and shown ail of the vehicles the department uses - from graders, front end loaders, garbage trucks to snow plows. One of the visiting classes was the grade 3 and 40of Florence M. Heard Public School. All 26 members of class are seen here posing in front of one of the trucks used for snow clearing: In fact, two members of this cljass won first and third place in the Public Works Poster Contest. In 1882, it was purchased as the rectory for Ail Saints' Anglican Church. It served ln that capacity through 69 years and 9 successive mînisters. ln 1951, the house reverted back to a private residen- ce for which It has since been used. Arciacluel~ Much of the beauty of this building is presently hldden. The original tongue-In-groove frame siding and the window trim have covered over by vinyl siding. The enclosed porch and the widow's walk have been removed and the two main-facade, f irst- floor windows have been enlarged. The roof'trim treatment, particularly the cornice and brackets, are still intact. With careful restoration, many of the significant architectural features wilI again become visible to the passer-by.
