PAGE 2, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6, 1984, WHITBY FREE PRESS They're round, black. of ten dirty and possibly the mont boring feature of any automobile. Your tires, though, are called upon to do the life.and death job of keeping your car on the road. Neglect and abuse them;it's a safe bet that sooner or later, they'll let you down, some- times in a manner that's downright treacherous. Interestingly enough, this is the *time of the year. when tires may have been giving a hint of just how touchy they can- be when ignored. There are two symp- toms to watch for - rising f tiel consump tion and a growing slop- piness in your car's handling. The fuel- consump- tion problem is flot in itself conc lusive. After ail, colder weather in- evitably means' more use of the choke as the engine takes longer to warm up after-start- ing. DCOR H OSHAWA 728-7/268. by Max Wickens- Automotive Feature Writer When a car starts cornering and handling in an increasingly vague manner, though, it suggests tire pressures have dropped sharply, and in ,winter that may resuit from a drop in outside temperatures. This happens because air becomes more dense as it cools, reducing the pressure within a tire. Indeed, tires that were properly inflated only a couple of months ago can become danger- ously sof t when temp- erature drops to the freezing point. If at 70F (21C) a tire gives a reading of 32 pounds per sq ua re inch, for example, at 32F (OC) its pressure wouid be down to only 26 pounds. Not only wiIl that sort of discrepancy make a car tougher to steer in an emergency, it will also accelerate tire wear, cause uneven wear and send you back to the fuel pumps more frequently. The pity of it is that surveys have shown time and time again that very few motorists can really be bothered watching for or remedy- ing such problems. Indeed, some appear to be under the mistaken impression that their tires are checked for them during routine servicing. w The fact 18' that the only proper way to care for tires is to check them thoroughly, reg- ularly and ideally once a week. First thing,_on a Saturday morning is a good time before a car is driven. This is the only way to get a truly accurate pressure reading, which must be taken while the tires are still cold. The key to the job is a good quality pres- sure gauge which canbe bought inexpensively at any automotive, supply store. Be wary of trusting the pressure reading from the dial on a service station air pump. They're by no means aiways accurate. While cool weather may soften tires, snow and ice will pose yet another tire hazard within a few. weeks. 1Indeed, the same danger may arise when a car is stuck in mud or sand. The problem cornes when panicky motorists become stuck'and spin their wheels to the point that the tread begins to scream and stea m. A Transport Canada spokesman points out, "When one wheel on the drive-axle of a car is spinning freely on ice, snow, mud or sand, and the other wheel is sta- tionary, the wheel in motion is spinning at twice the speed shown on the speedometer."
