The Town of Whitby's A4th annual Sports Recognition Night was presented with a slightly dif- ferent format this year as the athletes and their coaches were treated to a full course sit-down din- ner priorto the festivities. This year guest speaker was Mayor Bob Attersley -himself a former local sports celebrity. In his brief address, Attersley encouraged his mostly youthful ýÎ audience to strive for excellence in whatever ac- tivity they choose. He also paid tribute to their coaches and other aduit volunteers for their efforts on behalf of the youngsters. "You have made the young people in our com- munity better citizens," he told them. "We have a community where we get people involved. " "There are so many things for our youth to become involved with, " the mayor added. Attersley also had nothing but praise for three Whitby youngsters who are fighting their way to this year's Olympic Games which will be held in Los Angelos in a few weeks. Himnself an Olympian (Attersley played on the silver medal winming hockey team entered by Canada in 1960 games), he told the crowd there is a "different and special feeling of pride" associated with going to the games. Attersley also briefly mentioned the recently submitted consultant's report recommending that $523 million be invested i the expansion and im- provement of the Iroquois Park Complex. "Council wiilhave to consider it carefully," he said, adding that the best that can be hoped for is the staged implementation of its major recommen- dations. Attersley also hinted that many local sports organizations wil be unhappy with the outcome. In presenting the awards, the town recognized Whitby's three brightest hopes for not only places on the Canadian Olympie Team but medals as well. They are: Anne Ottenbrite, the swimmer; Christina McDonald, the gymnist; and, Glen Beauchamp, the Canadian amateur judo champion. Also honored for bis efforts was Craig Potsep, generaily recognized as a future Canadian swim- ming star. The 10-year old member of the Whitby Iroquois Swim Club bas been breaking all kinds of records and winning ail kinds of races this past season. Every year from now on, a scroll wil be framed and hung in the municipal building honoring these people for their efforts in local minor sports. Tennis tourney starts July 20 The 1984 Whitby Coun- ty Town Tennis Tour- nament will be held froni July 20 to 29 at the Iroquois Park Complex. Men's doubles, ladies' doubles and mixed doubles will be held froni July 20 to 22. Men's Raiders -% The Peacock Family Sport Raiders have cap- tured the minor bantam championship of the Metro Summer Hockey Leagues international tournament which was held at Chesswood Arena on the July 1 holiday weekend. In the championship gaine, the * Raiders defeated the Brantford Clippers by a 9 to 2 score. The contest was extremely close after the first period with the Raiders holding a 2 to 1 lead on goals by St. Aubin and Brennan. The lone Clipper goal was scored by Tippel. However, in the second period, the Raiders used a crisp passing attack to break the game wide open. The resuit was five unanswered goals. Shayne Stevenson net- ted two, with singles going to Brennan, Scott Luik and St. Aubin. In the third period, the Raiders employed a strong checking game to protect their lead and were able to up their total to nine with single goals by Corrick and Grant. Falesy scored the second Brantford goal late in the third period to round out the scoring. In round robin play leading up to the cham- pionship, the Raiders won three of four games played.
