The presentation was part of the closing ceremonies of Synergy '84: The Suncor Youth Symposium on Energy Exploration From Space., An expenses-paid trip to the symposium was the prize Koster earned by winning the Suncor Energy Award in the Durham Regional Science Fair. The Youth Science Foundation annually orgarnzes and judges over 65 of these fairs nation-wide. Koster and approximately 60 other award winners from across Canada designed an energy ex- ploration satellite while they were at the symposium. They were assisted by satellite engineers from the RADARSAT Project of the department of energy, mines and resources and communications. Koster and the other students also met James van Hoften, the astronaut who repaired the Solar Maximum satellite during the April space shuttle flight. Suncor Ine., a major integrated oil company, co-sponsors the Award and the symposium with the YSF, a charitable non-profit organization which is Canada's only national, orgamizer of youth science ac- tivities. Jaycettes received first place in their category for outstanding unit and second place for their unit publication the "Speakeasy. They also took home second place for out- standing project "Marigold Festival Children's Festival"t which they ran last Sep- tember during the Marigold Festival. Lastly, they won third Free Warriers Day 'tickets National Exhlbition's Warriors' Day Parade will be held on Aug. 18 beginningatlO:30a.fl. More recently, at the Jaycee National Con- vention, "The Great-t-t Canadian National" held in Transcona, Manitoba, July 1 to 4, they earned second out- standing unit ini Canada in their category. Also, "Marigold Festival Children's Program" received second place honors in ail of Canada for outstanding project. The Whitby Jaycettes have now begun another fiscal year by electing and mnstalling a new executive at their an- nual Presidents' Bal and Awards Banquet. Unit President is Sue Anderson; past- president is Ruth Olley; vice-president is Nancy McDoweil; secretary is Lorraine Cowen; and, treasurer is Lynn Ar- buthnott. The Whitby Jaycettes is a women's organization geared to the interests of women 18 years of age to 40. The "4years plan of action (Y.P.A.)" 1 includes projects to help the community such as M.S. Carnation Day/Month and, Polka Dot Door Live; projeets to assist the Jaycees like the soap box derby and the Santa Claus Parade; projects for personal developmer.t like effec- tive speaking, commit- tee management, calligraphy, C.P.R.; and fellowship projects like family camp out, girls might out and summer barbeques.
