" Purcell was coach of the York University team for 10 years and was involved in both junior and minor professional hockey for 10 years before that. The club will hold try- outs by invitation at the Malvern Arena iScar- the season starts. Some 70 players have been ini- vited to the try-outs. They will eventually end up with a 19-man squad that will play a 48 game regular season that starts Sept. 21 at 8 p.m. Purcell said that he wants to build "dan aggressïve hockey puck," he said, 11I believe Whitby's looking for an aggreusive hockey club." Finally, the breakthrough that the Whtby-Garrard Road Tyke team sponsored by the Brooklin Redmen, has worked so hard to achieve; they won the "Gold" championship at the Mississauga Lacrosse Tournament. The Redmen won three. out of four games including two shutouts for stand-in goalie Jeff Kolesnikowicz who won the tournaments' spor- tsmanship award. Scoring in the 20-0 win over a young Pelham team were Wayne Primeau' with six, Rohan Mehta with four, Donnie Wilkinson with four, Derek Wright with two, Michael Burrows, Matthew Sorichetti, Jason Cseresnyesi and Chris Shannon. The Redmen con- tinued with a 13-0 win over the host tykes Mississauga. Primeau romped in with seven goals, Mebta scored five including his 50th of the year, and Wilknson' completed the scoring. Next, the Whitby tykes found themselves matched with the hard- hitting Etobicoke team. Despite a valiant effort, the Redmen lost 2-11 with goals by Primeau and Wilkinson. The most exciting game was the "Gold" champion- ships. Whitby prevailed 6-5 after a tough close game with Kitchener. Primeau found the net five times with help from Burrows for the other goal. The WGR peewee No. 2 has had a tougit year. They put two wins together at the Mississauga tour- nament to win the Silver Championship for "1C" and "D")t peewee teams. They were com- petitive in an 8-10 loas to Wallaceburg. Three goals each by Ricky Badowich and Matthew Shearer, singles by Jonathan Head and Derik Ellis and two assists by Richard Carr. Shearer got the lone WGR goal in a 1-6 loss to Burllngton No. 2 peewees. The WGR No. 2 peewees dominated 7-2 over Mississauga No. 2. Badowich scored four times, Shearer had two and Ells had one. The "Silver" cham- pionship game matched the locals versus our Ajax neighbours. The locals saw the trophy to be had, put in that extra bit of effort, and had their third win of the year 9-2 over Ajax. Gregory Fawcett had two assists by Whitby goalie Brett . Agnew. Craig Shannon was awarded as the most sportsmanlike player. The WGR peewee No. 1 team was competitive in the "A" and "B" teams at the Mississauga Tour- nament but the only win was most sportsmanlike title by goalie Wayne Paddick. In a strong effort, the Whitby Hideaway peewees bast 8-9 to Hamilton with three goals by Garrett Cam- pbell, and singles by Alan Frank, Jamie Smith, Rob Martin, Chris Husted and Chris Thompson. The Hideaways tried to corne from behind again but Kitchener hung on for a 7-5 win. Whitby singles were by Frank, Brian Grieves and Dennis Directo with two by Garrett Cam- pitell. The last game of the round-robin was a 10-al tie with Clarkson. Grieves scored- three, Husted had two with singles by Frank, Paul Hamilton,. Matt Cook, Brandon Smith and Garrett Campbell. The Hideaway were finalists for the "Silver" championship. In an 8- 13 effort with Orangeville, WVhitby had two goals each by Husted, Hamilton and Campbell and 1 each by Cook and David Wood. The WGR bantamn team travelled to the Burlington lacrosse tournament. The opener was a heart-breaking loss in overtime 7-8 to Bran- tford.
