Bronze medal win- ners!1 The midget teain from the Whitby- Garrard Road Minor Lacrosse Association are third best in Canada. They earned the bron- ze medal in the top 'A' division at the week- long Canadian Chamn- pionships held for midget lacrosse teams at Gloucester. The par- ticipants included 399 boys and one girl, the goal-tender for the Calgary Norsemen. The Whitby Roadrun- ners started round-robin play with a 11L*6 win over Gloucester. Gloucester ran with the Roadrun- ners to keep the score to 4-3 by the end of the second period but tired in the third. Wayne Cor- nish scored three for Whitby, pairs by Bih Passfield, Rich Dyment and Gary Mark, and singles by Tom Frank and Greg VanSîckle. Goaltender Chris, O'Reilly earned six assists. The second gaine was against the provincial champions from British Columbia, the Saanich Seaspray. Saanich led 3- 2 after the first, 7-4 after the second period but Whitby responded with î6 goals in the third to win the gaine 10-9. Steve Dyment-scored the win- ner with 3:08 to go in the game. Other scorers were Mark with three Passfield with two, Cor- nish with two, Richard Napper and Dean Van- derllnde.. The third gamre was characterized b> ex- tremely close checking with uor neighbours, the Peterborough Lakers. There was no score until 12:42 of the second period, a rare occuran- ce in lacrosse. The Lakers thought they had a coinfortable 4-1 lead with 4:47 to go in the game but that lead narrowed to 4-2 at 1: 10, to 4-3 with 23 seconds to go and Greg VanSickle tied the game 4-4 with 9 seconds to go. Cornish scored twice and Mark had one. The fourth game was not quite as tough as Whitby won 8-7 over the North Delta Tomahawks froin B.C. Pairs were scored by VanSickle, Mark and Rich Dyment, with singles by Steve Dyment and Chris Ain- sworth. The last game of the round-robin was against the Ontario Provincial champions, Missis- sauga. The Roadrun- ners played well and were leading 7-2 after two periods. In the third period, John Perves of Mississauga got loose for six goals. Whitby lost the gaine 12-13. VanSickle scored three, pairs by Napper and Steve and Rich Dyment, with singles by Ainswor- th, Vanderlinde and Cornish. The 3-1-1 record got Whitby Roadrunners in- to the semi-finals again- st the undefeated Coquitlam Lybbterm of B.C. Whitby had an early 3-0 lead before Coquitlam changed goalies and switched to man-to-man defense. The speedy Roadrun- ners were outrun in this 13-6 loss to Coquitlan.- Mark got three for Whitby, Cornish goi two and VanSickle got one. The bronze medal game was against the Burlington Chiefs. The bench personnel were coach Neil Vanderlinde, assistant coach Bruce Mark, Tramner Andy Dyment, convenor Rick Palowski and Manager Norma Ainsworth with help fromn Major Leslie. Coquitlam went on to win the gold medal over Peterborough Lakers 11-9. Whitby was also represented at the Canadian Champion- ships for peewee lacrosse that were hosted this year by the Owen Sound Cash & Carry Alcans. The WGR No. 1 teain sponsored by The Hideaway coin- peted in the larger 10- teain 'B' division while the WGR No. 2 version of the Roadrunners competed in 'C' division action. The Hideaway were bronze medal finalists. The Hideaway's first gaine was a 4-11 loss to the Wings of Pointe- Aux-Trembles froin Quebec. Whitby scorers were Chris Husted, Garrett Campbell, Rob Martin and Matt Cook. Then they beat the Clarkson Blue Devils 9-6 with 4 goals by Husted, pairs by Cook and Mar- tin and one by Dan Ladouceur.
