'Seing able to breath normally each day is a function most of us take for granted," says Erica Nemis, program consultant with the Durham Region Lung Association, "But a per- son with asthma has no such guarantee". What exactly is asth- ma? People with asth- ma are said to have "ltwitchy airways". A special sensitivity causes their lung tissues to react far more than they should to various stimuli. The triggers are many and varied. For instance - grass, pollen, animal dander or even certain foods can cause an asthmatic reaction. An asthîna at- tack can also be triggered by cold air, a viral infection or exer- 'twitchy cising a littie too hard. And to compound mat- ters, it may be a com- bination of these factors that will cause an asth- ma episode. When asthma does occur, there is a narrowing of the bron- chiai tubes or airways to the lungs thus producing a feeling Of breathlessness. Most often the episodes, although un- comfortable and frightening, are relatively mild. Some asthma episodes, however are very serious.
