OCTOBER 3, 1984, PAGE 5 MLETTERS TO HE DITOIR Local'Mr. Grocer owner defends cornpany position Dear Sir: In the past week there have been many articles written -and comments made about the Dominion/Mr. Grocer situation. I would like to take this opportunity to put forth my own comments on this situation. Firstly, mny wife and, I purchased this store through a franchise agreenment with Wilett Foods which is a sub- siduay of Dominion Stores Ltd. We then in- corporated ourselves in- to a company called "Chahis' Groceries Ltd." In the franchise agreement, we pay Wilett Foods a royalty fee and an advertising fee for services they provide us, out of "our own money." We'aiso purchase our grocery and produce items through Wilett Foods. Ail biils such as hydro, water, goods purchased from Willett etc. aire payed by us out of Our own money., To purchase the store through the franchise agreement we sold our home in Ottawa and in- vested everything from it into the store in Whit- by. Nobody just said here is your store and gave us the stock. We have instituted our own program in regards to pricing which is dif- ferent from ail other Mr. Grocers. Examples of this would be milk. If you were to check al other independantly owned Mr. Grocers you would find different prices for different stores. This is because we are ail independant businessman reacting to the local pricing situation and our local competition. In- regards to the union situation when our store opened my wife and I hired a complete new staff for this store. Some were unemployed, some switched jobs and Atte rsley/Edwards n ot present Dear Sir: I agree with your editoriai of Sept. 19 which questions the status of the Brooklin water supply. However, I would like to point out that the regional works commit- tee has aiready reported to council on the cost to refurbish this outdated system which notes that it is the worst in the region. Some grandstanding was done by a fèw Oshawa regional coun- cillors but the letters, of credit as per the Brooklin development agreement clearly in- dicate that if develop- ment were not to take place monies from those letters of credit would go to bring a new water system to Brooklin. The names of those regional councillors who voted on the management recom- Thainks Dear Sir: On behalf of the Whit- by Girls Athletic Association I would like to thank the Whitby Free Press for their publication each week of the results and stan- dings of the teams in our softball house league. I know that many coaches, sponsors, players and parents depend on the paper to keep themn informed as to the teanis standing each week. Without your co-operation this would not be possible.
