Durham has raised $64,629 of its $115,000 goal. This represents a twenty-one percent increase over funds raised during the comparable 1983 Cam- paign period. "We're, still a long way from our objec- tive" says Campaign Chairman Tony Cowling, "but we hope that using the seals on Christmas mail and gif- ts wil remind people to send in their much needed donation. We have so rnany people depending 'on us for help.tt Respiratory diseases are among the leading cause of death and disability in Canada. One in five Canadians suffer frorn breathirig difficulties, and over 23,000 Canadians die each year from respiratory ailments. The Lung Association is unique among publicly supported health organizations. Historically, it has always devoted a large proportion of its locally raised funds to assist residents of the areas in which those funds were raised. Approximately 72 percent of the money raised in Durham Region is directed to local programming. 0f last year's $107,976 total, $32,959 was passed to the Canadian and On- tario Lung Associations for research projects and general support, with the remaining $75,016 used locally in programs for the relief and prevention of lung cancer, asthma, em- physema and oc- cupational lung disease. Newall today an- nounced a researchi grant totalling $300,000 over five years to McGill University's Ar- tificial Celîs and Organs Research Centre. The grant is being made jointly by Du Pont Canada and E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Com- pany. Director of the Cen- tre, Dr. Thomas M.S. Chang, is inter- nationally recognized for lits work in artifical ceils and their ap- plication to medicine and biotechnology. lits staff includes 15 full- time scientists and 20 associates engaged in many branches of medicine and science.
