Frise made the com- ment last week in reac- tion to a previous decision by Whitby Town Council to poat- pone giving the cham- ber a grant of $2,100 to help defray its operating costs in 1985. Council made the decision during last montha budget deliberations because the financial infor- mation submitted to them by the chamber wasn't complete. Treasurer AI Claringbold told council that the chamber's financial statement showed it would have a surplus of $8,592.70 at the end of 1984. However this figure wasn't shown as revenue in the 1985 proposed budget which sought a town grant of $2,100. According to Frise, the chamber will, in- deed, have the surplus at the end of 1984 but noted that moat of that money la committed to varlous projects being undertaken by the group. The president said that $2,000 of the money is held in trust to operate the 1985 Marigold Festival. Haîf of this money belonga to the town and will be returned if the festival la not held. Frise also said that $1,800 of the money is allocated for the repair of a sign at Cullen Gar- dens. However, the sign has already been repaired and the money may be used for other purposes. And because of that, the local group wants to become seif-sufficient. The chamber and council have always worked well together in the past, he continued. "There has been a good spirit of co-operation (between us) and we hope it will continue." That leaves a vacancy for the Mayor's chair. It wili be hotly contested with at Ieast four candidates trying for the position. Who will they be? , weil Joe Bugelli, Gerry Emm, Joe Drumm and Jim Gartshore, and that leaves a position on region, east ward and west ward. Ross .Batten will either' leave politics or stay on as north ward councillor and Marcel Brunelle will likeiy 1make a bid for the centre ward again.- So there you have it folks, the November election will take place in November and there could be a whole new look ir the Whitby Council chambers, <or it could be exac- tly the same as it is right now), don't hold your breath.
