PAGE 14, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 1985, WHTBY FREE PRESS C.A.]R.A. will ensure yard has no negative impact They may not have been successful in stop- ping its development, but the Corridor Ares Ratepayers Association intends to ensure that the Go Transit main- tenance yard that will be constructed on Champlain Ave. will not have a negative impact on the communlty. In a statement released last week, Colin Duddridge, president of C.A.R.A. said that Ontario En- vironment Minister An- dy Brandt is recom- mending that no hearing be held on the project because the area it is proposed for is exempt from the Environniental Assessment Act. The maintenance yard is being construc- ted as part of the GO- ALRT (advanced light rail transit) project that will bring commuter train service east from its present terminus in Pickering to Oshawa. "1C.A.R.A. bas fought for protection of the nearby residential neighbourhoods and is happy with the decision," Duddridge said. "T he reason is simply that the safeguards C.A.R.A. has fought for are a formaI condition of the * approval to proceed." Duddridge also noted that the environment minister has ruled that the Ministry of Tran- sportation and Com- munications "'must con- suit with the residen- ts...regarding design and construction of the maintenance facility to Ambulance ser-vice calis During the week that ended at midnight last Thursday, the Whitby Ambulance Service responded to 98 caIls for service. They ýresponde d to 29 calîs of a routine nature and to 41 s tandby calîs to ambulance services in Oshawa and Ajax.. They also responded to 28 emergency calîs including one motor vehicle accident. The number to caîl for ambulance service in the Town of Whitby is landscaping and design features, are incor- porated into the final design to minimize im- pacts on the residents. " Eariier this year, the C.A.R.A. president ad- mitted tosa committee of Wbtby Town Council that his group could do little or nothing to stop the project, which had full council support anyway. Instead, his group decided to con- centrate on making the facility as acceptable as possible. "The ratepayers took the position that the facility was not stop- pable and'that the most, practical approach was to ensure that the facillty looked good, sounded good and was safe, " Duddridge said. "lIt would have been very easy to make a lot of noise about pollution, and other 'red herrings' but the ratepayers wan- ted resuits that would benefit the neigh- bourhoocl and the town "This they have achieved in ful. " C.A.R.A. is now in the process of forming a working committee Of residents that will at- tempt to ensure that the conditions of 'the en- vroniment minister's approval are adhered to in full by GO-ALRT. Duddridge said that residents whose homes are close to the main- tenace yard site are welcome to become members of both the committee and C.A.R.A. Anyone wishing to becomne a member should cali either Roberta Szlachta at 576-8394 or Bill Walsh at 579-9265. The maintenance yard ta expected to be bullt before the first train pulls into Whitby sometime in 1987. * COMING TO ný THE SALVATION ARMY 122 KENT ST.
