PAGE 2, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 27,1985, WI-ITBY FREE PRESS Their Children won't be bussed, board teils parents By MARC VINCENT Free Press Staff A meeting with the Durham Board of Education appears to have resolved the problem of over- crowding at Col. J.E. Farewell Publie Sehool. Parents of children attending thse McQuay Ave, public school were concerned that some of their children would bave to be bussed to another schooi because of higis enroment in the September, 198, kmn- dergarten program. According to Tom An- derson, president of Farewell's Parent- Teacher Association there currently are 79 chlldren registered to enter the program this fail. Fears of the parents that the extra children would have to be bussed to other Whitby public schools were quickly dispelled by board of education officiais at- tendlng at the meeting. Chuck Powers, area f ~ ( _ ~ ,~ Ew'opean Women's Hea(tb CLun superintendent for Whitby and Ajax sehools promised that there will be three kmn- dergarten classes at Farewell, as opposed to the original two, and possibly four classes If the nuniber of registered students reaches 80. Farewell currently bas only enough room for two kindergarten classes but board of- ficiaIs promised that an extra portable would be provided, possibly two, after budget approval. "There is no problem with three sections of kindergarten and two portables, " Powers said,.after prompting by parents to provide a definitive statement. Depending on a recommendation pre- sently being discussed by the board there wil be accommodation for between 80 and 92 students to attend kÎn- dergarten at Farewell. The board is currently looklng at recommen- dations by staff to reduce the class size of kindergarten from 28 students to around 23. Thse difference means either three or four sec- tions for klndergarten at Farewell. Whtby Trustee Ian Brown, aiso present at thse meeting, said that while thse promlsed por- tables depend on budget approval he is 90 per cent sure they wiil be approved. "If there are 80 students registered for kindergarten there will be four sections of kmn- dergarten, it is simple as that, " he said. However, if the num- ber of students goes above 92 then it is a fact of lîfe, according to Powers, that some of the students wiIi have to be bussed elsewhere. "The days of the old community school, that we grew Up wlth is gone," Bruce Mather, director of the Durhami Board of Education, told the parents, 'lit is no longer a reality and simplyisanot possible. " According to Ander- son, the parents were also concerned that boundaries around Col. J.E. Farewell would be changed. However, Mather said the board was not considering any significant changes in the boundaries. I'There are some small changes of the boundaries north of Rossland, but they are absolutely tentative un- tii the trustees look at them," he said. Any changes in boun- daries which are part of the board's long range plan wiIl eventually be discussed with both board trustees and the parents before they go into effect, Mather ad- ded.
