WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 6, 1985, PAGE 1 Tories are vuinerable, NDP MPP tel local group By MARC VINCENT Free Press Staff Don Stewart's can- didacy in the provincial elections may lie a sur- prise to incumbent George Ashe, but Stewart )is holding his breath for even more surprises at the con- clusion of the elections. Receiving the nomination as the NDP candidate for Durham West, DonStewart is prepared to hound the Tories on what lie con- siders the constant mismanagemfent of On- tario's interests. 9 According to Stewart and a number of other NDP officials the Tory party, since the retirement of Bill Davis, is ripe for a downfall - the people of Ontario want a change. At the annual meeting held at the UAW hall in Ajax, about 50 people gathered to re-assert their promise to represent the ordinary people of Durham. Not oniy is the representation called for in the provincial j legisiature, but Geoff Rison, last year's federal candidate, called for more par- ticipation of the NDP at the local level. Rison contended that the Tories of Durham identify with the business people because the arrangement provides benefits for both parties but leaves out the ordinary people. "If the Dome stadium is profitable ail the money will'go towards the companies, however, if the proposai ï looses money the public purse will take the loss," he said. Deciding to give up the presidentcy of the association to run in the provincial elections, Don Stewart pointed to a number of other issues hie saw as integral to the campaign in Durham region. Stewart questioned the closing of the Durham Centre for the Developmentaily Han- dicapped and objectives of reintroduciflg the residents back into the community without prior planning on im- plementation. Stewart was also con- cerned about the lack of emergency measures in DurhiamT region in case of an accident at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station. "IWhen regional chairrnan Gary Herrema expresseC confusion about the nuclear plans and saic you had better hold ontc your hats, I was shocked," Stewart said. III arn not an alaralist but you need a clearlY understood and effec, tive plans for th( evacuation of a coin mumity." Stewart recalled th( Mississauga trai] derailment when hiI wife and he had to wai in a traffic staîl fo hours and cars cor verged upon gaý statinQ like ants. "A to bed with a full tank of gas and do you think the gas station owners will lie willing to stay behind." Worker safety in Durham, pollution in Lake Ontario and the ef- fect upon drinking water were other topics that Stewart wanted dialogue on. Brian Charleton, MPP for Harpilton Mountain, deputy whip and environment critic of the NDP caucus, who told the paity faithful that both Premier Frank Miller andý Durham West MPP George Ashe, who also serves as Minister of Energy are vuinerable. "MiËller is not Bill Davis and lie is vuinerable from the past (while health xiinister and minister of finance) and the present and occasional mistakes wil become bigger and better mistakes over the next few months. " Maintaining his topic of Tory and Miller mistakes, Charleton concentrated 'serious mistakes in appoin- tments, among them George Ashe." According to Charleton, Ashe is one "of the caucus members in the legisiature who already gets involved in the cat-calling and heckling." "He was first made Minister of Revenue and he didn't last very long, he was then moved the minister of government services -- the lowest portfolio there 1." "There are issues'in the minister of energy, like the Union Gas takeover by Unicorp, that he will not lie able to deal with." Charleton stressed that the way to beat the Tories is to keep a run- ning tali on their mistakes. I"Something that is easy to do," lie said.
