HUNT Pastel' Whitby Baptist Church In 1534, Jacques Cartier arrived in Canada. The same year a printer introduced the comma in English typescript. While the comma said> "Stop! ", it was Cartier's year to go! Knowing when to stop and go is basic to life. Readers found relief in having commas to mark off parts of the sentence. The littie whiskers gave sense, precision and breathing places to literature. How often in the hustie we need stopping places, breathers on the assembly line, quiet spots in the roar, solitary moments from the crowd, and times to pause and check our progress! "Be still and recognize God", advises the poet. Every six days, put in a comma .and take a breather, says the Jewish-Christian Bible. Let the machinery cool. Enhance the quality of life! The comma, however, is just a momentary stop, not a coma! It bids 4js hait and reflect, then pushes us back into the mainstream of life. How many delays did Jacques, Cartier encounter before sailing for Nouvelle France? Once out ta sea, how often did he look west and say, "Not today, maybe tomorrow! "? Wben North America hove in- to view, how many times did he stop and look at possible landing places, then go on to more suitable ones? Being religious, Cartier had the will of God in mmnd. "Deo volente" (God willing), many travellers have said, praying that God in his wisdomn would put commas in thue script and help them know when to stop and go. Some 1,900 years ago St. James said, "Listen, you who plan to travel, do business and make money. You don't know what tomorrow will bring. At its meeting last week, council endorsed a suggestion from Reg. Coun. Tom Edwards to admend the town's licensing bylaw to require business to file with te Durham Regional Police Force an adequate security plan. And, if these businesses cannot provide an adequate security system, the force's community ser- vices bureau will help them design one. If they still don't have one, council can then, at its discretion, refuse to issue a license. While council's ap- proval of the measure was unanîmous, Centre Ward Coun. Marcel Brunelle wanted to be assured that the police would not arbitrarily recommend that the business license be withheld from a business that didn't provide adequate security. Brunelle said that the decision to withhold the license should be made only by council after it bas received a report from both the police for- ce and town staff. The councillor was also noted that the bylaw didn't give any guidelines as te "what is an acceptable security plan" or penalities if one isn't provided. However. Mayor Bob Attersley assured Brunelle that the license would only be withheld after a report was made to council. "lWe can't bring in a standard that would DID YOU KNOW? CMCARE LT D.
