Pitts was on an official visit to the City of Scar- borough here in Ontario as part of his home town's 500th anniversary celebrations. Pitts says that Scarborough, England originally received its charter from King Richard Il in 1486, making it one of the oldest municipalities in England. While in Scarborough, Ontario,, which will celebrate its first anniversary as a city this year, Pitts took part in the officially opening of that city's new rapid transit line. "I have been very, very impressed with all that I have seen," Pitts told the Free Press adding that this was his first visit to Canada. The mayor decided to visit this community because in Yorkshire, Scarborough, Whitby and Pickering are ail part of the same county, virtually all next door to one another. Pitts said that he just wanted to tell the folks at home that he had been to Whitby, Ontario. In the photo above, the Mayor of this Whitby, Bob Attersley, (left) is seen here presenting Pitts with a plaque in memory of his short visit which was only long enough for a tour of the Municipal Building. Free\Press Staff Photo erEE PRESS Premier Frank Miller's decision to call a provincial election May 2 has pleased all four of the candidates running in the riding of Durham West, which includes Whitby, Ajax and Pickering. Ashe Incumbent Progres- sive Conservative MPP George Ashe, who also serves as Minister of Energy in Miller's cabinet, said that he had a strong feeling that the election was going to be called Monday. "I had a strong feeling that it would be today (Monday, or next Mon- day." Ashe said. "The feeling in caucus generally was sooner than later, so it might as well be now. Let's get it over with." And it was only in- cidental, the Tory fron- tbencher said, that he had a full campaign committee meeting on Sunday. It had been called three weeks ago to assess the local party organization's position since they had been ex- pecting the election to be called last fall. "The timing on that was excellent," Ashe said adding that his machine is oiled up and ready to go. The major thrust of this campaign will be job creation and job security, the incumbent MPP said although he expects other issues such as Ontario Hydro, the transportation of tritium, the closure og the Durham Centre for the Developmentally Handicapped and the planned GO Transit rail commuter service ex- tension to be debated frequently. Ashe, who has been this riding's represen- tative in the Ontario Legislature since 1977, is confident of another victory.
