WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3, 1985. PAGE 7 Whitby's second blood donor elinie to be held Tuesday . 1-.-.l. --- 4 la ha *i t.heW hit By MARGARET HORTON With the arrivai of spring, the Whitby Branch of the Canadian Red Cross hopes that al their regular blood donors will attend the spring clinic on Tuesday, April 9 at the Whitby Legion Hall on Bryon St. S. from 1 to 8 P.m. The arrivai of spring seems to rekindie a spark of life in ail of us. It's great to see the sun shining and to feel ifs warmth again, to see the tulips and daffodils rising through the earth. The Red Cross hopes -that the arrivai of spring will also rekindie in many people the desire to do something for others - to give the gift of life that many people need every day. Bîood levels are ex- pected to remain critical throughout 1985. Goals are set everyday The company will also provide roadside weed spraying this year for a price of $7,526 which Claringbold saYs is about 64 per cent less than last year's cost. The treasurer also told council that "Careen Dandi-Lawn has performed weed spraying services for the Town of Haldimand and the Ministry of Transportation and Communications in 1984. Both agencies have advised the town that the work performed ..was satisfactory. " Council had budgetted a total of $34,500 for ifs weed spraying program but will end up spending only $16,235.45. for the collection of blood in Central Ontario and these goals are not being reached. This means that hospitals do not receive the number of units of blood they have ordered which resuits in the can- cellation of elective surgery. The supply of blood is saved for emergencies only. The following statistics will hopefully convince some new donors to corne to the April 9 clinic. Open heart surgery requires approximately 10 units of blood - there could be 600 per year in the Cen- tral Ontario Region. For one tooth extraction, a hemophiliac will use 3,000 units of Factor VIII made from 40 to 50 units of blood. One leukemia patient could use 100 units of platelets per week. In Toronto, over 10,000 transfusions of Whitby Pathfinders will be assisting the regular clinie. EDITOR'S NOTE: Donor Cinle commlttee The Town of Whitby will make substantial savings on ifs weed spraying program this year. Last week, Whitby Town Council awarded its park and boulevard spraying and ifs road- side spraying contracts t f Mount Brydges, Careen Dandi-Lawn was the lowest of seven bidders in the parks and boulevards weed spraying tender with a price of $8,709.45. Treasurer AI Claringbold noted that the company's 1985 bid was approximnately 30 per cent lower than 198 s low bid. bv branch of Socety. $16,235 wil be saved -on weed spraying ini '85 STHE CORPORATION OF THE TOWN OF WHITBY TOWN 0F WHITBY MUNICIPAL OFFICES C LO0SE D GOOD FRIDAY & EASTER MON DAY GARBAGE COLLECTION Garbage normally collected on Friday, April 5, 1985 wilI be collected on Thursday, April 4, 1985. The Toronto Processing Centre requires approximately 200,000 units of blood per year which is roughly 4,000 per week or 850 per year. This blood is issued to 67 hospitals in Central Ontario which include the hospitals in Whitby, Oshawa and Ajax. When you consider that Whitby's goal at each clinic is 350 units, and that we only have four clinies per year. you can see that Whitby is a mere drop in the bucket but indeed a necessary one if any of the above are to con- tinue. Much of the blood collected in Whitby is used to make cryoprecipitate which is a component of blood used in treating hemophiliacs. Whitby's blood can be used in this way because we are close enough to Toronto .that our blood can be taken to the Processing Centre in time to break it down into its four components. In this way, one donation can actually benefit four recipients. if you are taking the time tu read this article and you are a regular donor, please find a friend to bring to the clinic with you. If you've neyer given blood before, talk a friend into coming with you. The staff and volunteers are always very supportive of new donors and willing to help in any way. Any healthy person between the ages of 17 and 66 can give blood. The process of giving blood only takes ap- proxiniately 45 minutes of time. Join our regular donors in sharing that special feeling they get when they've given the gift of life. Like the arrival of spring, it may rekindle in you a new feeling for life.
