Well, whll they're stili shaking the bugs'los, the Pie Pourri at King St. W. and Stevenson Rd. S. is showing good potential as another fine addition to the local restaurant scene. Jodi Hunter, Manager of the Pie Pourri toîd me at lunch last Thursday that the restaurant was formed af ter- chef Carolyn MacLean met her mother, June, the owner of June's Sugar and Spice in the sast end of Oshawa. The restaurant specializes in desserts, Hunter said because her father, Irv, always complained the desserts served in Most restaurants wren't as good as they should be. WelI, dessert at the Pie Pourri is nothing to sneer at. Just looking at At would put 10 pounds on the average person. Calorie counters should beware. Ail the cakes and pies are made from scratch every day. Pies include cherry, blusberry, raisin, raspberry, lemon merangue, coconut crsam, chocolats cream and Boston cream. Cakes change every day but inlude aIl the traditional favorites in- luding chocolate and Black Forest. The entire menu -at Pie Pourri is the creation of head chef and kitchen manager Carolyn MacLean. Hunter says that everything is made from scratch, even the chlcken fingers and french fries. Lunch items include their own version of a western sandwich, a club sandwich and the choise of either chicken salad or rsd salmon sandwiches. 0f course, the traditional hamburgers are offered as are 12- inch hot doga and a three egg omelette. Their dinner menu, whils not as large as other restaurants (and theres no reason why it should be), offers a little of everything. Their beef selections include an eight-ounce sirlion steak or beef stroganoff. Poultry loyers have a choice between chicken fingers and chicken divan, which la MacLean's own creation. This dish of- fers chicksn and broc- coli combined in a cassarole and topped with cheese. Spareribs and medallions of pork ten- derlion covered with a creamy mushroom sauce also adorn the menu. I tried the medallions which were tasty. The only suggestion I have to of- fer is that they should be a little thicker. Other than that, they were well above average. Seafood loyers would probably enjoy the Pie Pourri's selections that include seafood crepes, beer battered shrimps, a truly excellent seafood casserole and a lobster thermidore. The Pie Pourrie is the only restaurant in Durham Region 1 know that of- fers this gourmet delight.
