WI-ITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, Stewart says no one has told him A shet is a good constituency man' CONT'D FROM PG. 5 not talking for the peace mevement. "If we are geing te seil a stradegic mlitary material to the Americans in violation of the spiriteofCanadianilegislation (already in place) 1 want it taiked about," be says. "I don't want il done quietiy, bebind people. 1 want people in On- tario to know that Ontario Hydre is planning te recover tritiumn and seil it te the Americans. " Stewart aise wonders, that if Ashe is sucb a people person, then wbere was be during the strike at tbe Ajax Dewty plant iast winter. "Here we have a greup of bis constituents, wbo are the meet igbly skilled-machinists living in Durham West, tbey make less money than people doing far less difficuit machine work ... they make less than workers at DeHaviland and you bad a corm- pany that was taking a very antique labor position in their negotiations. " This company, be cdaims, gave ils office workers dental plans but net those employees toiiing in the factory floor. It bad a pension plan that was earning six per cent a year during a time of inflation and yet was paying pensions te werkers with many years of service of about $4,000 and less. "And we have tbe plant ciosure in Ashburn," be centinued, "We bave a-minister, suppesediy speaking for bis constituents, wbo feeis that the present legisiation geverning plant losures is adequate." And for Stewart, Andrew Antenna'Is decision te close is Ashburn coaxial cable manufacturing plant on April 30 bas ieft bebind it a few unan- swered questions. And the meat important of these is "wby was that plant on double shift fer the last six mon- tha?" Stewart asks. "Apparently that plant bas istoi*aly been a one shif t eperation. But they doube teamed for six months and then anneun- ced a ciosure. "If we bad a public tribunal in Ontario wbere plant closures bave te be presented and the rationale explained te a public body, I think we ceuld get an answer te that question." Se, the New Democratic candidate wants te knew wby Ashe was speaking up fer the workers at tbat plant. III don't ses George Ashe speaking up for the needs of bis constituents. " That broughtbhim tob is fundamentai criticai of Ashe as the member for Durham West. "0f ail the people I've talked to in this cm paign, whether they wisbed me well or ill, no one bas ever used the phrase 'you're up against a good constituency man,' "Ihe said. Furtbermore he sess no reason to thank Ashe for tbe extension of the GO Transit commuter rail service. "Wben the incumbent makes mention of the kind of largesse the government distributes in bis riding I find reference to GO-ALRT' somewbat galiing," be said, "GO-ALRT has been buit to Oshawa and if you want to build a transit line from Pickering to Oshawa, bow you avoid serving Ajax and Wbitby is beyond me. 1 guess we're supposed to tbank Ge *orge Ashe that they're going to stop the train in Ajax and in Wbitbyand let people get on. The extension, be said, was built to Osbawa to serve its 130,000 or so people. "It's more a matter of ce-incidence that it goes througb George Ashe's riding. "lIt's the same tbing with the Ministry of Revenue building in Oshawa. What's he trying to prove? That Mike Breaugb <NDP MPP for Oshawa) bas more clout than he does? " But there are other issues in tbis campaign and many are economic. As dees party leader Bob Rae, Stewart believes that tax breaks for business and in- dustry should be directiy tied to job creation. He also believes that unemployment is a larger and more important issue than the deficit. He notes that if more people are working, more people are paying taxes which generates more revenue to be appiied agaînst the deficit. He aise believes that tbere should be a greater emphasis on co-eperative education and appren- ticesbip pregrams and betb should receive more funding. But if this candidate bas a strong issue, its the environnient. That the button te, push te, get a rise out of him. He aise called fer tougber stands on pelluters. He bas decried a Durham Regionai Council decision to forgive a Wbtby firm of 169 charges laid under its sewer use byiaw. The biggest threat to Durham West water supplies is to be found on the other side of Lake Ontario in the Niagara Gorge where the Hooker Chemical Co. bas an industrial dump site. He also promised to work for an immediate dlean-up saying that "lax Tory principles" have allowed owners of those dumps to use only "band-aid" measures. On'the issue of full funding for the Roman Catholic separate school board, Stewart says it is imperitive te maintain full access to both systems for both teachers and students. Neither must be discriminated against eitber in iring or admission practises by either system. He also believes that the funding should not be impiemented until the constitutionality of the program bas been determined and has called for an interim tax credit to be introduced for parents with children attencling grades il, 12 and 13 in the separate system. And while he wouid like to see himself sworn in as the new MPP for Durham West, Stewart believes that the election of Liberal Brian Evans "lwouid be a great step-up" from the re-election of the incuznbent, who he believes is going to be part of an ultra-conservative Tory ad- ministration shouid he win May 2's election.
