WIIITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, MAY 1, 1985, PAGE 29 Ç~YOUR DINING PLEASURE' Kelsey's arrives in Whitby By MICHAEL KNELL Free Press Staff Whitby has become home to another truly fine restaurant Kelsey's which opened in the K-Mart Plaza at Dundas St. E. and Ken- dalwood Rd. just a few days ago. According to manager and partner Stuart Beeston, Kelsey's was the original roadhouse when its first location opened in 1977 but since then was developed into a casual dinner house". 'We refer to it as a casual dinner house," Beeston told me at lunch last Friday. "We have decorated the restaurant to reflect the qualities of the 20s and 30's." Kelsey's is a cheerful, yet subdued place that offers a lot of intimacy for the dîner. Kelsey's has a huge menu that offers a wide variety of choice for the patron. Its appetizers and snacks range from deep fried zuechini or mushrooms to fried mozzarella to garlic la bread to escargot and potato skins (served in four varieties). They also offer four varieties of salad including a pasta salad, a house salad, a spinach and mushroomn salad as well as the traditional caesar. They com- pliment them with seven varieties of salad dressing. Six varieties of san- dwiches can be found on their menu including a hamn and cheese and club house that are ser- ved on a croissant - a unique and pleasant change. They also offer Philadelphia steak san- dwiches (I tried one for lunch and it was fan- tastic) as well as a fish and chicken filet san- dwiches. For those who want a light meal, Kelsey's of- fers another interesting selection including a .Mexican pizza, their own "Beef Nacho Ex- travaganza", a taco platter, chicken fingers, fish and quiche and salad. They also offer New York style chicken wings and the traditional burger. However, the burger fresh catch-of-the-day for seafood loyers as well as baked haddock, steak and shrimp and "Kelsey's Konglomera- tion" a combination of chicken wings, ribs and shrimp. From the barbeque, they offer New Orlean's style ribs and a nib and chicken wing combo. Desserts also receive some attention and in- clude carrot cake, two types of cheesecake, their own apple pie and Kelsey's "Fantastie Fudge Fantasy." Beeston also notes that Kelsey's speciality drinks are a big favorite in their other il locations across southern Ontario. Their drinks comne with such interesting names as the Cranberry Cooler, the Banana Ret- to, the Creamniscle and the Cape Codder. Beeston also says that Kelsey's will be comning out with a sumnmer menu in the next few weeks which will in- clude special drinks, fresh fish catches and grill items. The Whitby restaurant is also in the comes with a varîety of toppings including three kinds of cheese, two of bacon, cucumber slices, mushrooms, green. pep- pers, fried onion and more tempting morsels to pick and choose from. Their dinner menu almost reads like a travelogue. The patron can sample either Italian or Mexican fare as well as the more familiar Canadian dishes. Italian dishes include lasagna, panzerrotti (pizza dough stuffed with mozzarella, mushrooms, meat sauce and green peppers and then fried until golden brown), two kinds of fet- tuccine alfredo or with meat sauce), or chicken parmigiana. For those who like Mexican food, Kelsey's offers chimnichanga their own style of burrito and a com- bination plate. Beef loyers can take their choice of filet mignon, a New York Strip, t-bone or ten- derlion kabob. This 252-seat restaurant also offers a process of setting up an 8o to 100 seat patio which will also be licen- sed in the near future. From Tuesday to Saturday, Kelsey's can becomne a place for that night out when their dise jockey spins his records from 9 p.m. onwards. Kelsey's is open from il a.m. to 1 p.m. Mon- day to Saturday and fr0 il a.m. to Il p.m. on Sundays when they also offer their Sunday Brunch for $5.95. «Y (Ce-4, Type writer j RENTALS I also SALES & SERVICE COMING AT YOU LIVE!
