PAGE 30,WEDNES)AY, JUNE 5, 185 WIIITBY FREE PRESS 1985 Crysler LeBaron GTS Chrysler proudly an- nounces an all-new, five-door sports sedan -- the 1985 Chrysler LeBaron GTS. Computer-designed in the tradition of the world's great touring sedans, Chrysler LeBaron GTS offers world-class handling and outstanding driver and passenger comfort. The aerodynamically- styled, front-wheel- drive Chrysler LeBaron GTS is offered in a single, distinctive body style - a spacious five- door liftback -- in two price classes, highline and premium. It is also available in a tur- bocharged engine ver- sion. The all-new Chrysler LeBaron GTS is precision-built on a 2618 mm (103.1 inch) wheelbase. Overall length is 4581 mm (180.4 inches). Completely designed and engineered by com- puter, LeBaron GTS is the most technologically advanced of Chrysler's passenger cars, and is built in the world's newest high-tech passenger car assembly plant, Chrysler Cor- poration's new Sterling Heights, Michigan, Assembly Plant, near Detroit. LeBaron GTS is Chrysler's first entry in- to the emerging "new nmiddle" market. This segment comprises more affluent, upwar- dly-mobile, younger- minded buyers who are looking for more than basic transportation. LeBaron GTS is positioned to compete with sports sedans like the Honda Accord, Pon- tiac 6000 STE, and higher-priced imported sports sedans like the Audi5000 and BMW. The contemporary look of the 1985 Chrysler LeBaron GTS starts with its aerodynarnic styling, which results in a drag coefficient of only .37. The "aerowrap" windshield is raked at an angle of 58 degrees to minimize drag. Special exterior body features include body side aperture panels, full-stamped doors and liftgate, and flush-fit, urethane-bonded win- dshield and liftgate glass. The top of the door panels project into the roof, concealing the drain troughs. Hinges were welded to the door and bolted to the body for ease of adjustments. Thewindshield wipers are semi-concealed to reduce wind noise and improve visibility. Chrysler's engineers paid particular atten- tion to making the LeBaron GTS an ex- traordinarily quiet car. Besides the triple sealing of doors, the concealed windshield wipers and drip troughs, other noise reductions were achieved using additional mastics and sound deadeners, premium sound in- sulation and silicone exhaust hangers. The rear lift gate is made up of stamped steel inner and outer frames. The hinges and dual gas props are con- cealed. A plastic isolator on the liftgate striker further reduces noise. Clear Coat paints are standard. An electric rear window defogger and washer/wiper are optionally available, as is a sunroof with spring- loaded wind deflector. LeBaron GTS bum- pers feature soft front and rear fascias. The front fascia, with its in- tegral nerf strip, lower cooling opening and parking and turn in- dicator lamps, is backed by an all-new aluminum reinforcement bar and impact energy absor- ber. The aluminum bar offers protection equal to an ail-steel reinfor- cement. The rear bumper fascia has a high- strength steel reinfor- cement bar attached to the impact energy ab- sorbers. The rear tail, stop, turn and backup lamps are in a totally- sealed unit mounted outside the body to reduce the possibility of water leaks into the cargo area. The rear side markers employ an integral reflex lens and separate bulb. A molding flush to the sheet metal surrounds the glass in the win- dshield and rear lif- tgate. The tinted liftgate glass is 4 mm thick, the side glass, 3.2 mm. A new "snap-in" system used to install the side glass ensures precision fit so no adjustments are necessary. A left manually- operated remote control flat-mounted outside mirror is standard. A right manual remote mirror or dual power- operated outside mirrors are available as options. Power window and power door lock swit- ches are positioned for- ward and below the ar- mrest top surface for convenient fingertip ac- cess. ENGINES AND SUSPENSION The 1985 Chrysler LeBaron GTS is powered by an elec- tronically fuel-injected 2.2 litre, four-cylinder engine, or the optional turbocharged 2.2 L engine with multi-point EFI. The standard tran- saxie is a close-ratio, five-speed manual. A three-speed automatic transaxle is optionally available. Complementing Le- Baron GTS' brisk per- formance is a specially engineered suspension designed to deliver a true touring sedan ride, and to transmit to the driver a better feel for the road. Standard suspension components include dual path upper Iso-strut mounts, con- stant camber, trailing arm-beam rear axle with coil springs, large diameter tubular rear sway bar, gas- pressurized front struts and rear shocks, and reduced-effort quick- ratio power steering. All-weather, steel- belted radial P185/70 R14 black sidewall tires are standard.
