By JAN DODGE Free Press Staf f Pugsley Manor, a Dundas Street hnme for the mentally and physically handicapped people will provide ac- commodation for 40 when the addition (s completed. Located at 425 Dundas St. E., the home will provide affordable living toformer patients and out-patients of Whitby Psychiatric Hospital, according to owner, Bob Parkinsonl. There are 26 residents staying at the home now with Parkinson and his wife, Bonnie, staffing the facility, assisted by some of the residents. Parkinson intends to employ three fuli-time and two part-time staff to assiat him and his wife when the expanded facilities are complete. New town regulations which came into effect the beginning of June "got ride of homes that shouidn't have been opened in the first place," Parkinson said. They also forced Parkinson to move f rom his Kent St. address to hîs present one due to inappropriate zoning. Included in the new regulations was the stipulation that if a home was offering this kind of accommodation to more than two people there had to be special facilities built in. in compliance with these town regulations and with the Ministry of Health some of these sRecial, facilities which planned for Puglsey Manor are: a com- pletely closed in fire escape and a complete fire alarm system throughoutr il parking spaces, a cedar hedge, a 5* privacy fence, a gar- bage container to be serviced by a private contractor, and brick on the addition which closely matches the brick of the original house. The addition will in- clude a lounge, dining room, a kitchen which will be used solely for the preparation of residents' meals, 8 bedrooms, and 7 bathrooms. As well, Parkinson said, there have been two new lounges developed in the original house and he has plans for two coin- operated washing machines, a pool table. and a coin-operated V.C.R. to supplement the color television. At the home Parkin- son says they offer con- structive living with regular meals, coun- selling and iistening, and with no alcohol or druga allowed on the premises. Parkinson said he encourages residents to treat the house as their home and to make full use of it. They work closely with us at the hospital t Whtby Psychiatrie)i. Sometimes we'll take sumeone for overnight or a weekend. This bridges the gap hetween amn .argupiîent at, home the streets ail night," Parkinson said. Parkinson is en- thusiastie about the renovation and addition. He has kept a pictorial record of the work mn progress to show how the original ba sement has been dug out to a depth of 8 feet, how covered-over windows have been opened Up and al the steps in the new construction. The residents have also been greatly in- terested in the building. Somne have worked for Parkinson.- I can pay them in one day, what they'd make in a week at the hospita.' Many out-patients work in workshop or hospital services at Whitby Psychiatric Hospital.) Owning this home i, for Parkinson, a con- tinuation of the family business. "Each member of my family has a home. Mother started it; She had one in Coîbourne. My brother has one in Oshawa and my sister has one on Mary St. in Whitby." The sign was originally used on the first Pugsley Manor operated by his mother in the rS4'r5 Parkinson had the lettering under- neath changed' to describe his own operation. "It cost me more to do that than to get a new sign painted, but t had sentimental value," he said. Whitby's Most Widely Read CA SSi,4FFDE AUS Bob Parkinson, owner and operator of Puglsey Manor moves his sign into place at his home for the mentaily and physically handicapped. The sign, now altered, was originally used at a similar home started by his mteinCoîbourne. The renovations and expansion of the home la now in progresa at 425 Dundas St. E.
