PAGE 8, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST " 1, 1985, WIIITBY FEE PRESS Last election for mayor of Whitby held ini 1976 By MICHAEL KNELL Free Press Staff Did you know that there hasn't been an election for mayor in Whltby since 1976? That's nine years. That paricular elec- tion saw then Centre Ward Coun. Jim Gar- tshore don the mayor's chain of office after defeating former town councillor and promninent Rotary Club member Dr. Ken Hobbs. Gartshore earned 5,752 votes ta Hobbs' 3,035. Gartshore's firat term as mayor was marked by one ironical event. He presided over the of- ficiaI opening of the new Whitby 'Municipal Building on Rossland Rd. E. after first being elected ta council twa years previotisly on a platform of trying to get the move ýstopped 50 Oiat Oie town hall could remain in the downtawn core. He was acclaimed toaa second term in office in 1978. Af ter announcing his intention to retire in 1980, Gartshore was succeeded as chief magistrate of the municipality by Bob At- teraley, who became Whitby's 4lst mayor by acclamation. Atteraley was ac- claimed ta his second term in 1982 and it currently looks that he will be unopposed should he stand for a third term this Nov. 12. (While at least four membera of Whitby Town Council have ex- pressed a desire ta sit in Oie mayor's chair at some point in time - it appears that none of them are willing to take Attersley on this time round. Ail four have told me that Attersley's im- pressive record would make hlm hard ta beat and they are willing ta continue servirig under his leadership.) There is also a strong possibility that Gar- tshore will return ta the local political scene. For Oie last six months or SO he has been thinkin@ý about con- testing one of Whitby's two seats on Durham Regional Council. However, Gartshore has yet to make a public committment concer- ning bis intentions. Looking over the 1984 municipal election resuits doesn't give one much hope for an ex- citing 1985 campaign. Of the town's 26,757 elegible votera, only 8,113 or 30 per cent tur- ned out to cast their ballot in 1982. The lowest turn out was in Oie west ward where Coun. Joe Bugelli was acclaimed ta a third term. Only 19 per cent or 1,656 of the ward's 8,827 eligible votera tur- ned out to exercise their franchise. The ward with the highest turned was the north where incumbent Coun. Ross Batten was involved in a real struggle to keep his seat after a strong challenge from Roxanne Reveller. Reveller came within 63 votes of trufing Batten out. The final count was Batten 754 and Reveler 691. (Batten convincingly won the Ashburn poIls to ensure his marginal vic- tory. He also resides in Oie hamlet.) In the north, 44 par cent of the votera turned out with 1,445 of 3,318 their ballot. Batten and Bugelli are both expected to seek another termn on council in their present positions. Reveler has indicated that she will not conteat Batten's re- election bld. No one other than Bugelli has indicated a desire to seat council's west ward seat to date. The only upset of the 1982 municipal election was found in the centre ward where newcomer Marcel Bruneile ousted incumbent Coun. Barry Evans and two other candidates. Brunelle earned 782 votes to Evans' 632. Lynda Buffett got 414 votes while Tim Brum- well was given 302. Brunelle is expected to seek a second terni and his three opponents from 1982 are nat expec- ted to challenge hlm. In the east ward, Coun. Joe Drumm easily earned. re- election in 1982 defeating challenger Dennis Fox by 1,634 votes to 1,018. In that contest, 34 per cent or 2,627 of the ward's 7,627 eligible voters cast their ballots. However, no other potential candidates have stepped forward at this time. Both of Whitby's in- cumbent regional cou>. cillors - Gerry Emm and Tom Edwards - were acclaimed in 1982 and unless Gartshore entera the fray, bath stand a resonable chance of keeping their seats wlthout fighting for. re- election in November. Also acclaimed to of-' fice were Whitby's three trustees to the Durhamn Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board - Charles Roche, Andrew Miller and Joanne Prout. However, there was a race for Whitby's two seats on the Durham Board of Education. In- cumbent trustees Ian Brown and John Buchanan where elec- ted by comfortable margins over challengers Ken Brown of Ashburn, Wayne But- ton, Don Kennedy, Ted Shiner and Debby Tsagris. This year, three trustees will be elected who have held office since 1980, will seek re- election. The town's separate achool supports elected Ed Finan to be their representative to the Durham Board of Education. He defeated Nei] McCarthy by a reasonable margin. Seven local residents sought the four seats available on the Whitby Hydro-ElectricCCom- mission. Incunibents Robert Cawker, Gerald Cox, John MCKlnney and Albert Randal were elected. Also seeking seats were John Hughes, Larry Norrena and Kevin TunfleY. This year's election will be held on TuesdaY, Nov. 12. Municipal elec- tions are normally held on the second Monday in November. However, the second Monday this year is Rememberance Day so the election wifl be held the following day. The races for the various election positions will be finalizeci when nominations close Oct. 21.
