PAGE 10, WEDNESDAY, J ULY 17, 1985, WHITBYF Brnk liun B ie r: By BETTY-JEAN BLYTH Cali 655-3679 wlth Items for thîs column If there's one thing that can ruin an entire day for me quicker than anything else, it's shopping. In par- ticular, grocery shopping. Like most women I enjoy the browsing kind of shopping when I'm not looking for anything in par- ticular, just a bargain or two. I just love a bargain. It must stem from my Scots ancestry, especially on the maternai side of the family. My mother is a notorious bargain hunter. More than once I can recail my father complaining that she was putting him in the poor house by saving him al (bat money. You see, she couldn't pass up a bargain but then when she got it home, she'd have to figure out wbat tu do with it. I haven't quite reached (bat stage yet, but I do en- FRERE PRESS joy wandering from shop to shop and mail to mal looking for those absolutely irrestible buys. One or two 'real steals' can put me on top of the world for days, but two hours in a grocery store reduces me to blithering idiocy. Part of the problem is trying to please seven dif- ferent people and stili stay witbin my budget. Once upon a time it was quite simple, I just made out a list and breezed tbrough picking up the cbeapest brands of everytbing. Now that tbey're addicted to those specific brandsiI find that they've become the most expensive. Then there's the matter of picking up seven different kinds of cereal, sbampoo etc. I no longer shop to a ist, 1 cbeck out the specials and mentally plan meals around tbem as I go. 1 also try to stock up on good buys of our favourite brands. Once, I tried to teach the kids to shop for me and explained my methods, but when we ended up witb 25 pounds of rice that takes two hours to cook, I abandoned that approacb. Friend hubby is even more bopeiess. He tends to pick up ail the gourmet items and it is difficuit to plan a meal around smoked oysters. I even tried making out a list for him with ail the items in the or- der tbey are on the shelves of my favourite market. Haif the essentials were missing when he got home and his excuse was that the grocer had rearranged the shelves. Ail this is bad enough, but the rising cost of food and supplies has made the whole dea1 a living nightmare. Time was when I filied a whole station wagon full of groceries for $30, now I can put $400 worth in the giove compartment. What really makes me a prime candidate for a padded ceil though is that after 1 go tbrough ail the trouble and aggravation, not to mention a king's ranson each week, I iug it home, take another hour stowing it ail away in fridge, freezer and cupboards only to have someone come in, stand in front of the open fridge door viewing the bulging shelves and exclaimn "there's neyer anything to eat in this house 1 " BAKE SALE The women of Brooklin United Church are holding a bake sale on Friday, July 26 in Grass' Park from 2 to 5 p.m. This Is a terrific opportunity (o get some real home baked goodies for the family or guests without baving to spend hours in a bot kitchen. You bargain hunters wili also want to check out the white elephant table as weii. The church ladies are requesting that ail the ladies of the congregation come up with some con- tributions for this fundraising event. So, ladies get busy digging out your white elephants and if you are baking, make an extra for the sale. Caîl Cathy Ferguson at 655-4661 if you have anything to donate. News items are still scarce, so please, please caîl me if you have any items of general interest. The number during the day is 666-1133. 1 must have (hem a week in advance to be sure of their inclusion.
