PAPER DRIVE The second Brooklin Boy Scouts paper drive will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 9 ar. Whitby Seniors WalUpaper Centre expands From the time Mac Bloom could reach the cash register in her father's dry goods store, she's been selling. And from the time she met ber husband, Dave years ago, the two have been selling together. 'II guess it's in our oblood. We've sold everything from soup to nuts," said Mac. reeling off a long list of businesses the two have started together. "But this has definitely been our best effort," she said, waving her arm at the rolîs of multi-colored wallpaper poking out from everywhere in the Bloor's Ajax store. The couple, who cal themselves "the originators of the wallpaper. discount business," opened their first wallpaper centre outlet in Oshawa ten years ago. Since then, business has grown steadily and they've ad- ded two more stores in Scarborough and Ajax. But even that won't hold thern. Last Thursday, the couple expanded their Ajax store tu twice its original size. The store which forrnerly offered a selection ot over 1,000 wallpaper patterns, now offers nearly double that. "The concept which has made us successful is discount wallpaper displayed in super- market style," ex- plained Dave We deal in ahl instock wallpapers. We don't carry books - SO customers don't have to pay high book prices. " While the Wallpaper Centre, unlike other discount wallpaper stores, carnies discon- tinued lines which selI inexpensively, current lines make up haîf of their stock. According to Laven- thol and Horwath Con- sultants of Toronto. the consulting firm that prepared the study, Whitby is prime for an intermediate grade "economy" hotel. "We'd love to have a full-service hotel, but they're telling us it's not in the cards. That's reality," said Attersley. "Sti11 the report is very positive and F'm happy with it." According to him, the town bas talked with five different hotel developers in the past eîght rnonths. AIl are in- terested, but were waiting for the word from Laventhol and Horwath. "We needed the report to selI the package. Now that its ting a botel - what con- cerns bim is getting the 'right one". Laventhol and Hor- wath suggest that the bulk of a hotels business will likely corne from the in- dustrial commercial sector. Wtb increased ernployment in the area projected at 2.1 percent through 1991, and building permits coming in at double wbat bbey did ten years ago, tbe future dernand for botel accom- modations looks good. Cullen Gardens, the largest tourist attrac- tion on the eastern bor- der of Metropoliban 'l.oronto, is also expec- ted to generate con- siderable dernand for lodging. In view of the f act that the botel's primary business is expected to corne frorn industry, the consultants pinpoint the soutbeast quadrant of Tbickson Rd. and High- way 401 as the preferred site for botel develop- dloser to the tourist cen- tre of town. The site recommen- dation was conditional. bowever. on Consurners Rd. being extended to Brock St. so as to allow easy access to the botel fromn the industrial area. Wbîle the Brock site was described as .'aestbetically better" than the Tickson Rd. site due to land topograpby and its main street location - the con- sultants maintain that a new hotel ai Tbickson would do better in ai- tracting the businessman. As for why the' con- sultants discouraged luxury botel develop- ment, according to them, "the existing full service hotels in Toron- to East and the refur- bished Holiday Inn in Oshawa will satisfy a signif ica nt portion of the demnand" projected for such accommodation". The outcome of the study bas confirmed tnwnn1aning ire-or H.B. Signs .........O cent off the book price. "Our overhead is lower. We stay out of shopping centres or locations with high ren- ts. That enables us to seil papers inexpen- sively," said Mac. "The customners who frequent our stores, don't care that they aren't beautiful - they come for quality papers at low prices." The three wallpaper stores are open until 9 p.rn., Thursdays and Fridays for easy shop- ping, and the sales clerks specialize in helping customers coordinate colors and patterns.
