PAGE 6 WEDNESDAY, DBCEM BER 18, 1985, WIIITBY FREE PRESS AjaxlPe O« tobe open longer By SUSAN LESJAK Free Press Staff Canada Post has yielded to local pressure and agreed to keep the Ajax post office open during the evening two nights a week. The decision, released through MP Scott Fen- nell's Ottawa office, is an atterùpt to mitigate the problems related to the lack of mail delivery in the municipality's new subdivisions. Canada Post called a freeze on new home delivery about three* years ago in an effort to get its finances in order. in the meantime, however, hundreds of new subdivisions have sprung up, none of which receive home delivery. The problem is as "lhorrendous" in Whitby as it is in Ajax, says Whitby East Ward councillor Joe Drumm. When the councillor heard the news of the Ajax post office's ex- tended hours, he said he'd "get on Fennell's back" immediately to obtain the same service for Whitby. "We're getting deluged with cais iom- plaining about the lack of service," conifirmed mayor Bob Attersley. "The new homeowners have had it right up to the top." While both Attersley and Ajax mayor Bill MacLean say that ex- tending the post office's hours is not an accep- table alternative to home delivery, in the Sec page 25 Food driïve The staff at the Continental Bank on Dundas distributed by the Simcoe Hall Women's League. What concerned Drumm was the liability that the town miglit in- cur -in the event that someone was injured or property damaged during the four hours that the Kinsmen proposed to collect donations from passengers in cars stop- ped at the downtown in- tersection. Despite the service club's assurance that it would take out liability coverage for a minimum of $1 million, councillors could not forget the more than $5 million the city of Brampton was asked to pay out last year for in- junies sufferea a teenager on wown property. "The Kinsmen were saying $1 million in in- suranke, but the town could he held liable even on top of that," said Drumm. While the councillor stressed that hie had nothing against the Kin- smen or any other ser- vice club, the town could not risk granting such permission to any group, until the staff had thoroughly reviewed the insurance situation. r aU V A lîghl tronspondels, ond oulo' vîdeo iunctîons Once pou nove__________________ a ~ofew utonsomICfO0YflooeoPI We are Specialists in tively prlced models, as vmelI 0as a Custom made ACryliC Mails, Waxing and... Rum-laced eggnog revives numbed fingers. Avuncular philosphers wonder that a tree that stood so perfectly in the field now tilts and sways in a dime store stand. Tipsy hands right the tipsy tree. Then come the decorations: should . Christma.s ever come out of a box, this should be it. Bright hob- hIes secreted away fromn years past emerge, each placed delicately on a tree for the memory it carnies. Here is the stocking that once appeared on a car seat on Christmas Eve, filled with candy and topped with coal. And the pastry decorations, baked and varnished one Christmas long ago to bring magic to a sîx-year-old. Years upon years, layer upon layer, the memnories fi up the tree until every spot is covered with joy. December is a winter month like any other. But each year, Christmas rushes upon us, born on the back of Arctic wînds that drive wisps of snow across Christmas tree lots. Christmas arrives only among family and friends. Especially in the shiveýs of a Christmas tree farm.
