Alzheimer Society gets boost The Alzheimer Society of Durham wiii be receiving a $28,s55 grant frorn the Ministry of Heaith to expand and consolidate .their program of educational and family support ser- vices for friends and famnily of Alzheimer suf- ferers. Although statistics on the disease are hard ta corne by, Dr. Maureen Gorrnan, past president of the Durham Alzheimer Society, believes as many as 2,000 people in the region may suffer fram the disorder. Until now the society has operated entirely through the efforts of volunteers like Dr. Gorman but the provin- cial funding will allow them ta hire a co- ardinator who will work * two days a week ta organize support groups for aizheimer care- givers and the educatian sessions which are available for professionais or any community groups wha want ta learn more about the disease. "We're ail volunteers and organizing these pragrams can be very time cansuming. It can take as much as three days just to get a sup- port group of ten people together with all the phone cails and ca- ordinating ail the arrangements. Its a lot ta, ask of a volunteer," said Dr. Gorman last week. The government grant will alsa pay for the periodic services of a group leader ta assist the support groups and will caver the costs of audia-visuai rentais, brochures, honourar- iums for guest speakers and other expenses in- curred by the organization's publie education program, said Dr. Gorman. Announcing the grant in Toronto recentiy, Heaith Minister Murray Elston said it was one of 34 new community men- tal health programs in the province ta be fun- ded ta the tune of $4.6 million. "The aim is ta in- crease knowiedge and awareness of the disease and give family members a supportive outlet ta help them cape with the progressively deteriorating nature af Alzheimer's and the stresses involved," said Mr. Elston. The program was first recammended ta the province for funding by the Durham District Health Council twa years ago but was tur- ned down, said Dr. Garman.
