Instead, he said the board waited a year and then last Sep- tember extended tise school day and split tise lunch hour into two 40 minute shifts so that tise teachers were stili responsible 'for lunch room supervision. "Vie didn't ask for a longer schôol day, " said Mr. O'Connor. "Vie asked the board to hire lunch room supervisors so we could have a 40 minute uninterupted lunch houx and the board agread and thse contract was signed. An extended scisool day was not wisat we had agreed to." Mr. O'Connor felt tise charges of bad faith bargaining should bring added pressure to bear on the board during the fact finding hearing for this year's contract and said the teacisers were confident that the provincially appointed body would find thse board had not lived up to its contractual agreement. In today's fact finding hearing, Mr. O'Connor said the tWo sides will present their positions and then the fact finder will report back within 30 days on how the two parties can best achieve a settlement. If they are stili unable to reach a settlement, Mr. O'Connor said there are three remaining op- voluntary association of the profession' which was formed towards the end of 1980, to primarily act as spokesman for the profession. He said the teachers are keeping ail their options open, including strike action, and by April he said they should know what actions, if any, will be taken. The spokesman said there are a wide range of issues on the table in- cluding working con- ditions, class sizes and a minimum compensation for inflation. "Thse frustration is starting to set in. There are no more incremen- taI increases for teachers with more than 13 years, except those that are bargained for, s0 we have teachers who have been earning the same wage since our' laèt contract a year and a haîf ago. We want some kind of minimum compensation bult in.. But we're also looking at a number of non- monetary 'issues," said Mr. O'Connor. In the meantime, Mr. O'Connor said teachers will carry on with the bargaining and hope that a settlement ci>.,;î be reached without resor- ting to further actionî.
