The total number of people registered as out cf work with centres in Ajax, Oshawa and Whltby for the month was 8,550, up from 8,186 during Decemnber. In January 1985 there were 13,180 people looking for work but because cf a new systemn of records keeping at the centre, that figure does net refleet the samne Information. In spite of the rather formidable size of our graup, the food and service were superb. The table was immaculate in a white cloth with fine china, silver and crystal. The meal was a marvellous progression of delec- table dishes fromn the vegetable dip appetizer right on through ta the grande finale of twa homemade desserts including a fabulaus fruit flan. The price for this feast was merely the pleasure of our com- pany. You see, we were the guests of my two maiden aunts. Maiden Aunts are a very special breed. Without the encumbrances of a husband or children of their own they are completely free ta do their awn thing in their own way. They are free ta pursue a career, travel ta exotic places or just ta indulge their maternai instincts on the progeny of their siblings. Without the day ta day tedium of having ta provide for a family, they are free ta dote and spoil ta the delight of bath parties. A child is poor indeed who doesn't have at least one Maiden Aunt in his or her if e. In aur family, there are three generations of nieces and nephews who have been badgered and berated, coddled and cossetted, fussed over and over fed. At one time or another, we aIl have had the luxury of being the centre of attention and being taken on a special trip or being given a special treat that aur parents either couldn't afford or considered too frivolous. No parent ever dared defy -a Maiden Aunti Unfortunately, the cook who prepared the sumptuous feast I described above is now ln her mid-nineties and there's no sign of a younger one comîng along ta, take her place. It looks like Maiden Aunts could become as extinct as dinosaurs unless we do something soon. We have the Save the Whale Societies and Protect the Platypus Clubs so why nat form an organization ta save the Maiden Aunt? We'll have ta hurry before it's too late. LIONS CLUB MEETING The new Brooklin and District Lions Club is holding a meeting tonight at 8 p.m. in Brooklin Community Centre. Ail interested men 19 and over are invited ta attend. Recently this new service club chose anexecutive which consista of president - Dave Brennar, secretary - Brian Wright and treasurer - Don Morey.
